It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 3-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

All remaining items have a destination in mind. The carrots, tomatoes and grapes will be included in tomorrow’s lunch. I’ll be slow-cooking cauliflower and cheese soup later today. This will then be frozen, in portions, for packed-lunches.
There are no ingredients to whip up a No Waste Tastes Great dish for dinner tonight. It’ll be a fish and chip supper whilst watching Children In Need!
So, It’s a zero-waste-week for me. Which confirms, in my mind once more, the less you buy – the less you waste.
You may recall I didn’t do a full shop last week, and planned on topping up Monday. But with a poorly child, not well enough to go to school, that didn’t happen.
Did we starve?
No. Of course not.
With some long-life store cupboard ingredients and a few frozen staple items, such as fruit and veg, we managed comfortably. I’m quite adept at using what I have.
It would seem my smoked haddock pasta bake works well with canned tuna also.
I now have a fighting-fit first-born, and a waste-free-fridge to be proud of.
Shame I can’t say the same about the fruit bowl.
I have 2 bruised apples and a brown banana.
How did the banana get in the bowl? I need to investigate. Mixing bananas with other fruit is a sure-fire way to potential waste.
Not this week. I’ll be conjuring up a new bake. I’m thinking apple and banana loaf, with a dash of cinnamon. A slight adaptation to this fat-free recipe should do it.
I’ll report back with the finished article on my Facebook page later today. If it tastes as great as I anticipate, it’ll make an appearance at recently recovered first-born’s fundraiser tomorrow.
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”
If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work

Great job! Glad your (not so) little one is better now. Mine has just gone down with a tummy bug. Our fridge may go a bit wonky for a few days so I will try to make and freeze stuff. Happy weekend Jo! Xx

Congratulations on no waste and a healthy family. The bread sounds delicious and a good idea for the fund raiser. We didn’t have any waste either, but because of construction in our house, we are mostly eating out.

Eating out tends to reduce waste! Good luck with the works!

Bananas are such trouble, aren’t they? It seems like they go from great to overripe in a split second.

I have the opposite problem – we eat so many that I have a hard time keeping some long enough to get properly overripe for smoothies and banana bread.

You are too disciplined! 😉

If I pack one for the kids lunch and they don’t eat it (which happens from time to time!) it comes home brown!

I love brown bananas. It’s the perfect excuse to put them in a smoothie. There was some waste around my place. http://roadnotchosen.blogspot.com/2013/11/disgruntled-lettuce-and-where-ive-been.html

Brown bananas are quite popular it seems! Haha!

Some waste:
– 2 green peppers. They weren’t very tasty but I planned to make mummy fingers for Halloween. Life happened, the fingers didn’t get made, the peppers went to the compost pile.
– About 1 c. cooked spaghetti squash. I didn’t realize how fast it would get slimy. The Beefy Onion Ragu, still good,is now frozen with leftover whole wheat pasta in lunch portions.
Successes:
The beef from the Beefy Onion Ragu got used in many other dishes. I used what I had on hand instead of the recommended cut, knowing it would come out tough and bland rather than decent to eat. I minced the meat and put it into two flavorful casseroles, thus disguising its lack of flavor and tenderness. One dish used a package of smoked dried corn I got on vacation (a local specialty), thus clearing out the cabinets a bit. The other used beans and brown rice, thus being very healthy. Both will be frozen in portions shortly.
Upcoming Unfrugal experiments:
Eggnog Ice Cream.

Now that sounds good! Please let me know how it goes!
