It’s Friday Guys…. time for No Waste Tastes Great

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Rather a full fridge for a Friday, due to two reasons:
1. Food has followed us back from our Dorset tour
2. I did my grocery shop on Monday – just 4 days ago rather than a full week ago
The ultimate aim of my Friday fridge is to ensure as little waste as possible, and this week although the fridge is packed – it’s a good week.
There’s a purpose and place for all the items.
Top shelf is a mixture of spreads, cheeses and dairy products (oh and a little garlic). Everything is well within it’s’use by’ life.
As we move down the fridge there’s salad stuff and fish. Now I’m not one for pre-flavoured and packaged fish, usually, but the salmon in particular is great for cooking outdoors in a hurry when back from a day at the beach.
(Please excuse the photo-bomber! The Hubby is as impressed with the Aldi Teppanyaki grill as I am!)
The mackerel I’ve been buying lately as it’s a great quick salad idea for lunch or an emergency dinner with some salad leaves and pasta.
That’s the no waste tastes great plan this Friday. Salmon for dinner this evening (the Kids are on a sleepover) and mackerel for Saturday lunch. That should use up the majority of the salad also. The limes will be chopped and frozen. Melon to be eaten over the weekend and the yogurt will satisfy my muesli cravings.
This just leaves the bottom shelf. A second jar of olives got opened by accident! Oops! I’m thinking that this dish may be on the menu plan next week. I’ll substitute the green pesto with red and add some sundried tomatoes. Improvisation is key in the kitchen when keeping a check on potential food waste! (remember my good enough chocolate fudge cake?)
This chicken dish will also be on the cards, hopefully using up the remaining tomatoes. Whatever pesto remains will be frozen in an ice cube container for later use…thanks Carol for the tip in the comments section of this post…
Jamie Oliver would be impressed ;-).
Jamie’s advocating ‘shop smart, cook clever, waste less’. Live on The One Show last night on the BBC he was inviting viewers to send in images of potential leftovers and ingredients for him to suggest how to ‘use them up’!
Talking of ingredients, Rachelle Strauss over at Zero Waste Week is asking you to rename your leftovers as ingredients next week.
Zero Waste Week (now in it’s 6th year) runs 2nd-8th September. Even those of us who have good no-waste habits need a reminder and push from time to time. Next week I’ll be focusing not only on eliminating any potential fresh waste, but having a ‘use it up’ week – as I do from time to time. I’ll be scouting round the cupboards and freezer to ensure no food is deteriorating. This should make for some interesting meals!
Watch Rachelle’s clip here – it’s explains everything you need to know to take part.
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…and don’t forget to drop a link in the comments if you’ve blogged about it!
No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.

Thanks so much for your lovely mention of zero waste week; I appreciate it. And your slow cooker chicken recipe looks a winner – I’ll be trying that! Thanks for all your support 🙂

Rachelle,
BTW, I’m not sure what’s wrong, but every time I try to comment on you page I can’t.
Good luck with zero waste week.

Lost my first comment. Thanks for the olive idea. I have some that should be used up pretty soon. Also, I have a whole new appreciation for the pictures of your fridge now that I’ve seen the outside of it.
