Food Waste Friday / Culling The Condiments

July 26, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

———————————————————————

As you read this, I will be on a beach in Wales. Whether it’s a sunny, or wet and windy, beach I have no idea as I type. But a beautiful beach it will be!

Therefore there’s no Friday fridge photo today. Instead I’ll share the waste I discovered, when cleaning the fridge,  before leaving for our trip.

Condiment waste.

It doesn’t happen very often, but I’m not immune.

My fridge is rather badly designed in that the crisper drawer at the bottom is difficult to access. I’ve mentioned this previously.

Instead of using it for perishables I store the long-life condiments in there, as they are required infrequently. Although I’m not sure pesto and olives are classed as condiments – but they are in jars and reside with the condiments in the fridge.

The question is whether I would have less condiment waste if I had them easier to hand. I don’t know – maybe?

I just cannot afford to lose the storage space at the bottom, since I have such a small fridge for a family of four.

The situation needs monitoring, me thinks…

(Making the most of the good weather in the UK, I haven’t been at my real or virtual home much this week – blogging is back to normal from Monday.)

As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

SO you had to actually toss pesto, black olives (aren’t they in brine?), and something with red chillis in it. Unusual. A suggestion: freeze the pesto in an ice cube tray, pop out the blocks of now recipe portion pesto, and freeze in a separate baggie. Ditto the chillis. Black olives? I would have tried to top a pizza, a salad to use them up. Do you keep a running list on the fridge of items that need to be used up? Just a thought.

Hi Carol – the pesto suggestion is great – I’ll try that. To be honest I wouldn’t normally put pesto and olives in the bottom drawer. I was struggling for space one day and moved them – hence their demise. The olives had leaked as they had tipped over so weren’t being protected by anything. Thanks!

Hard to say if you would do better with the condiments if they were out in plain sight. I tend to ignore mine because they have such a long life. Then sometimes I get surprised.

After several weeks of waste, I have a no waste week this week.
    Have a good trip.

For me, accessibility is very helpful in monitoring food and a lot of other things 🙂 But not everything can be front and center in the prime spot to be seen or reached. What about a note somewhere (calendar, phone, sticky note on fridge) to check the condiments once a week with a view to incorporating into the meal plan if they are getting old-ish? I have cut way back on condiments since the kids left home. They never liked the same thing – except ketchup – so it’s easier now to buy less and waste less. That time will come for you, too …

I’m late to the party this week, and it hasn’t been a good week! Being busy and not staying on top of things meant more waste than normal. Oh well, I hope this week is better:
