It’ Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Not bad, even if I do say so myself…
Top Shelf is the usual spreads and cheese, plus 1 yoghurt this week – all with life left in them
Unfortunately on opening the garlic tub to check I found this:
My food waste confession this week. I’ll salvage what I can.
All that’s left is 1 courgette/zucchini, a bag of onions and the pot out of ‘Brenda’ one of my slow cookers.
What’s in the pot I hear you ask?
Soup.
If you read yesterday’s post you know my parsnip and apple soup once again hasn’t turned out as hoped. This time due to lack of an onion rather than an overdose of honey!
Everything gets eaten at Chez Wright. It’s about to be blended and frozen. Luckily I have some fresh onions to hand. Amy, a reader, suggested I add an onion now. And that’s what I’m going to do. I still can’t post the recipe as i haven’t one that has been made correctly and one that I’m happy with.
Fingers crossed 3rd time lucky eh?
Apart from that I have onions, which will be chopped and frozen, and courgette.
I feel the need, the need to bake… (which iconic movie have I paraphrased that line from?)
Nom-Nom Bread here I come!
Thanks to Kristen for this recipe.
Talking of Kristen, let’s go over to her for the last word…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**Message from Jo – Linky Tools’ service is currently unavailable – I can’t access code for the link this morning. Sorry! I’ll keep trying!**
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

I love how you keep only what you need on hand. I am alright with this, but that is definitely something that is a tough sell on my family. They feel so much more comfortable with a very full fridge, but we just waste so much more that way.

The dwindling fridge is okay here, they’re come to terms with it 😉
Been over to yours – great photos! I love the croutons….perfect with soup. As for your onion, I could have done with that for my parsnip and apple misadventure on Thursday.

It’s a tricky little dilemma that. Working out whether doing a big shop less often or smaller shops when you need stuff is best. I’ve reduced it to buying certain, hard-wearing staples during big shops and more delicate, specialty items–hello bok choy!–when I need them.

It certainly is a dilemma and I’d suggest trial and error. I’m finding my once weekly shop working out well for me. I try not to do smaller shops in the week, as I’ve found it can increase my spend. The main thing is you find the right system for you, and for me it’s that I stick to my list!

You’re right about more regular shopping increasing your spend. That’s one of the reasons why I try to limit myself.

I’ve done that way too many times 🙁 A couple of weeks ago we were eating spag bol and the kids were saying it doesn’t taste as good as it usually does. I’d forgotten the garlic 🙁
Our food waste this week was embarrasing. I totted up £9 worth of waste. Mainly fruit and mouldy condiments. I have resolved to not buy any fruit except bannas and grapes. We just don’t seem to eat fruit as much in the winter. We do eat lots of veggies so i’m not too concerned. Hope you got the Aldi voucher in yesterdays daily Mirror?

Oh Sharron – I didn’t *hanging head in despair* 😉 I didn’t know about it – Duh!
That explains why I couldn’t get a car-park space for ages this morning!
Oh dear £9 – that is a lot. I do think it’s a good idea to mentally take note of the monetary value of the waste – it hits home that much harder then. That’d be a trip to the cinema with popcorn – okay so maybe not popcorn also, it’s very expensive now.
Talking grapes I relented and purchased some today (Kids are off school and came grocery shopping with me – not a good idea). They’ve religiously promised to ensure they eat them all up – we’ll see eh?
Sharron says
I have a spare one but it’s to be used by 1st of November. I can post it to you if you want, you can email me 🙂
Grapes are the only fruit that gets eaten by the kids, but the price is hair raising!

I learned the hard way, it’s better not to put garlic in a non-breathable container. And once again, I am amazed with your refrigerator.
simplybeingmum says
I too have learnt my lesson! Container to be changed ASAP!

A quart of chopped summer squash + tofu, which I was marinating. For some reason it turned into a science experiment within a couple of days.
simplybeingmum says
I love an experiment – we were hoping to fit the Science Museum in this weekend whilst in London – but the Kids had, had enough after the Natural History Museum- only so many dinosaur bones a 7 and 4 year old can take in in one time it would seem!
Shame it went to waste. Better luck next time… (p.s what’s summer squash?)

I’m joining for the first time today. I did pretty well this week. As I mentioned in my post, I tend to throw out lots of produce but this week I had hardier things on hand (carrots, broccoli) so they will last a bit longer. I agree with chasingsimplicity on the bare fridge. It makes me a little nervous too. Something to work toward.

Hi Julie – and a very warm welcome! Not bad for week one. The mash – you could freeze in the future. It turns out okay, particularly for topping pies etc…

Would the garlic perhaps be more likely to survive the week if you switched to a clear container? Just a thought. 🙂

You are quite right…time for a change of scenery – watch this space!
