It’s Friday Guys – Food Waste Friday. Or even #FoodWasteFriday for those joining in on social media. Lots are! Yay!
My week to host.
This Food Waste Friday I am not home. Hopefully I am enjoying the sun on the English Riviera.
Or maybe I’m sheltering from the British rain – who knows?
Whatever the weather, it’s still Food Waste Friday, and I am participating!
Are you?
As we headed on down to the coast yesterday (Thursday) I’m typing this Wednesday. Hence the title ‘Mid-Week Waste’. I still followed my No Waste Tastes Great routine, but a couple of days early.
Let’s deal with the waste first:
Some super-dry rice and a portion of frost-bitten salad.
Those two items I’m not transferring to my holiday fridge, but the remainder I will be:
This holiday is being spent in ‘Bailey’ – our minimalistic second home, with it’s teeny fridge. Photo over on Facebook this morning!
(I’ve meal planned for the holiday already, and done the grocery shop – to minimise food waste while we are away.)
As we were heading to Grandmas so she could wish us ‘Bon Voyage’ (and to load up her composter), it seemed an ideal opportunity to empty and thaw out the freezer. Grandma has space to take in our freezer items while we are away for a couple of days. Our housesitters do not need a freezer.
I keep a minimal freezer.
Top shelf is typically frozen fruit/vegetables for smoothies:
Second shelf down – Vegetables, 4 burgers and some paleo ‘ice-cream’. The tip-tops are coming on holiday…
Third shelf – More vegetables and some left-over profiteroles from New-Year when we had a smorgsbord. A friend brought them along.
I’m curious. How do you use your freezer? As you can see it isn’t really an essential item in our home, except it most definitely does help to save certain items from going to waste such as fruit, and holds emergency frozen vegetables for when we run out of fresh. And of course we need it for ice-cream!
As always the invitation is extended for you all to participate in Food Waste Friday. Please drop your link and/or comment in below.
A huge thank you as always to Kristen (The Frugal Girl) the original inspiration and founder of Food Waste Friday.

When the time comes to change my fridge freezer, I’d want to get a larger freezer, a chillet box and a small fridge.
I find that it is my freezer which is always full. I have meats for at least a week, prepared vegetables and dinners, pizza base, berries ice-cream in there. I’d love a chillet drawer to store my vegetables, and then a small fridge for milk, eggs, cheese, ham etc.
However, our fridge-freezer is eight years old and is still going stong, so no plans to change it just yet. 🙂

We are the same way with our freezer! It mostly stores things that are about to go bad. Enjoy your holiday!

Great minds – I’ve written about my freezer this week too! http://moretimethanmoney.co.nz/2015/07/24/zeroing-in-on-food-waste/ .
I only upgraded to a large freezer around two years ago and I wouldn’t be without it. I think the two things that I like most about having lots of freezer space are 1) a super easy way to preserve seasonal produce (freezing avocado – yay!) 2) big batch meal preparation.
Have a lovely holiday.

Food waste got the better of me this week in the form of leafy greens! Again! I just don’t feel like eating salad when I’m sick! So they headed to the bin, along with half a buttercup pumpkin that I didn’t get around to using. There were also 2 packets of biscuits that were at the back of the pantry that the kids had gone off. I was all set to donate them with our weekly food bank donation, then I checked the date. Oops! Hopefully with my cold moving on my food waste will be better this week! Have a good time away 🙂

Enjoy your Holiday! As for my waste this week… in addition to my mid week waste, I had to add 2 mangoes that I bought on Wednesday, a container of lettuce, and I think I have some spinach that hasn’t turned yet – but is close to it. Now on to talk about my freezer – I mean freezers… I used them to help cut our grocery budget by buying in bulk and/or storing things when they are on sale. I have a midsize deep freeze in the basement that keeps our food around -20F. Usually what I do is load up on larger cuts of meat when they are on sale (Turkey, Ham, Pork roasts, whole chickens etc.), bread, casseroles, and I freeze vegetables and fruit that I am unable to use quickly (I also put frozen treats here – out of sight out of mind right?). In the kitchen I have a standard above fridge freezer for ice, and smaller frozen items we use more frequently. Sometimes it also becomes a staging point for things from the basement prior to cooking.
