Every alternate Friday I have the honour of hosting Food Waste Friday.
Food Waste Friday was the brain child of Kristen aka The Frugal Girl.
Kristen, embarrassed by the amount of food she wasting started Food Waste Friday in 2008.
Seeing what an amazing way Food Waste Friday was in keeping a person accountable for the food they waste, and ultimately reducing that waste through being mindful, I joined 2010.
And have never looked back.
I even have my own Friday routine – No Waste Tastes Great.
Although the routine has evolved over the last 5 years, the fundamentals remain the same.
A very important part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine is cleaning my Friday fridge.
Now I say fridge. What do you say?
Last Friday while checking out Kristen’s lovely fridge, I noticed she too called it a fridge.
What do you call yours?
And how’s your Food Waste Friday? Is your fridge (refrigerator) packed to the rafters, or spick and span waiting for a fresh supply of food for the week to come?
Mines uber-clean this week. I even scrubbed away with a toothbrush on the corners. Just one of those motivated days I guess.
As for my food waste, well I do have a confession. There’d been a couple of red onions hanging around. Maybe it’s the colour of the skin but I did not see how much they’d deteriorated until I peeled them. Oops. No photo though today.
But that’s it this week. And as for having to rustle up some No Waste tastes Great dishes, I haven’t a lot of potential waste to save. There are some carrots – which easily slow cook into my favourite soup. There’s also a little pasta sauce and salad to use up – but that’s a no-brainer. pasta salad.
Wherever you are joining in – here, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram please do consider using the hashtag #FoodWasteFriday
It makes it so easy for us all to connect up and keep on track!

Can you fly over to Florida and come clean my fridge? I’ll provide the toothbrush! It’s good to see you back in the swing of things 🙂
Mine is packed to the gills. I’ve been making jam, pickled ginger, pickles, and dehydrating various fruit. I keep it all in mason jars in the fridge so it makes for a crowded fridge. Plus I usually cook dinner with enough leftovers for 1 to 2 persons’ lunch so we always have leftover containers in there as well.
I did have waste this week as I resolved to throw away a few things that had been hanging around a little too long. I posted about it here: http://imperfectlyfrugally.blogspot.com/2015/03/food-waste-friday.html
I had to change my dinner plans last night, which ended up being great for food waste as I used up some vegetables that I had harvested/bought but that didn’t figure on my menu plan. I made a lovely stir-fry with spinach from the garden, grape tomatoes, mushrooms and a green pepper.

When you are making such a lot from scratch you will have a full fridge. With no added preservatives and chemicals to get the items from perishing, you need that cold temp (particularly in Florida!)! You sound as though you’ve been very industrious. Heading on over to yours now. Virtually that is, wish I was about to hit The Sunshine State in real life though.

Late to the party … we say fridge in Canada, too, perhaps the British influence? In my grandparents’ day they called it an icebox but maybe that’s not a fair comparison, since it was actually a box with ice 🙂
