I’m a little late to the blog today due to being rather tired!
Want to know why? Click here or here.
Anyhow! Back to reality and the 2000’s rather than the 1800’s.
I’d like to extend another invitation this Friday.
This was last weeks invite to Food Waste Friday.
I’ve been participating in Food Waste Friday (Thanks to The Frugal Girl) for almost 4 years.
Each week I confess any food waste, alternate weeks I actually host Food Waste Friday – Thanks once again Kristen, and every Friday I invite you all to join in.
But I’d like to focus a little more on making food waste saves on the weeks I do not officially host.
These posts have always been called No Waste Tastes Great as they are based on my Friday routine. I sincerely believe by using up what we have (and what potentially could go to waste) we can all rustle up fantastic meals and snacks.
Therefore today it’s a slightly different running order. Do not fear there will be a fridge photo at the end of the post. It wouldn’t be Food Waste Friday without a photo of my fridge. Not for me anyway.
We will start at A.
I have apples and avocados to save.
The apples I have been given by a friend. This is an easy save.
This is what I did with last years haul. Be aware this is a video!
I agree – a rather random video. Looking back maybe I’d been in a slightly unusual mood that Friday?
But the avocados I’m a little perplexed by.
I know we’ve had national guacamole day this week, but what else could I do with them? Do you know?
Moving on to my confession – 2 carrots do not look good. I’ll save what I can. But unsure how deep the damage is currently.
And as promised:
Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
There’s a destination in mind for all it’s contents.
I invite you to share your food-waste confessions here, in the comments below, or to offer some much needed advice for my slowly deteriorating avocados.
Thanks as always to Kristen, The Frugal Girl, (the founder of Food Waste Friday and the inspiration behind No Waste Tastes Great)…Don’t forget to head on over to her’s to link up your Food Waste Friday post!

We use avocados in quesadillas, on salads, in smoothies, on sandwiches…

Think I saw avocado spread (like peanut butter) on bread as a filling. Have no idea what that would taste like. Thinking salad may be good. Unsure what works well with avocado though for the right combo? Any suggestions? Help!

Salad:
I like the spring mix lettuces as a base, but whatever you’ve got. Cube up the avocado, cube up some cheese (I like mozzarella), add some dried cranberries (or tomatoes, or cherry tomatoes), add some dressing (I like Italian). Add some croutons or sunflower seeds for crunch. Yum!

Okay that’s tomorrows salad. Watch this space. Well Instagram actually 😉

Hi Jo! Squishy bananas here so just whipped up a batch of banana and choc chip muffins for my little boy and his friend for their play date after school today. Had an interesting leftovers lunch too ?. Leftover rice from yesterday fried in a pan with beaten egg then added half a tomato and some salami chopped that was in the fridge about to go off. Kind of egg fried rice Italian style! Very nice it was too!
You could mash and season the avocado and have it spread on toast with sliced tomatoes on top xx

Nell I love to hear about unusual combinations to use things up. We have all sorts here! I posted on Twitter a picture of melted cheese on toast topped with Cranberry sauce. And I think that was deemed as unusual! haha! You sound like you’ve really got your ‘thinking chefs hat’ out today.
Tomatoes have been mentioned over at Twitter also – so reckon this may work then? I’m a bit of an avocado-virgin really. Not a lot of experience whipping it up into anything out of the ordinary.
Those muffins sound fab – hope the boys enjoy them!

Thanks! I love weird and wonderful combos! Forgot to say I received a copy of “Simplify your life” the Naomi Saunders book that you recommended. Got it yesterday and just started it. Can’t put it down! Feel very inspired so thanks again for this great site ?. Have a lovely weekend xx

I’m glad you like the book Nell. It really kicked things off for me. I found the link to Zen Habits in the back and you could say the rest is history and voila here’s my blog!

Avocados! I think they are my fave food ever though yes indeed they spoil quick 🙂
There are a million things to do with them though one of my faves is including them in a pesto sauce for pasta. I call it a Green Goddess sauce. Not on my blog but I will one day. Make a pesto and when blending add in your avs.
Your carrots remind me of some I had recently. I scraped them and they were fine.
Here is my very good (no) food waste week.

Can’t believe I am so avocado naive! Everyone seems to know what to do with them! Like the ideal of mixing in with pesto. Love pesto.
Well done on no waste!

Avocado on toast, with a little black pepper sprinkled on top is awesome! (if you like avocado!). You should definitely try it 🙂 One of my favourite summer lunches! I had some eggs and half a lemon for food waste this week 🙁 but I did make a couple of saves! Hummus added as a condiment to the kids dinner rather than heading for the bin, and a few crusts turned into bread crumbs! Neither of which would have happened if I wasn’t planning on writing a post about it this week, so thank you for the inspiration!
