Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, 3-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. Every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Thursday Fridge
As I peeked inside my fridge, Thursday afternoon, I was faced with a dilemma.
Knowing the Kids, and I, were eating dinner elsewhere, I could;
a. Use valuable (and scarce) time by hitting the local Aldi to grab some supplies a day early
or
b. Use what I had to rustle up the Hubby’s dinner
Faced with this crossroads, I opted for conjuring up a dish from a very sparse fridge.
Into the slow cooker I popped broccoli, carrot, cheddar cheese, stock and seasoning.
Now, it could be argued that this isn’t a ‘dinner’. But I guess that depends what dinner means to you.
I wouldn’t serve soup for dinner every night of the week. But in order to save time, money and reduce food waste I’m happy to call it dinner from time to time.
Asking the Hubby how the soup was, he replied ‘great’.
Perfect answer, because I believe No Waste Tastes Great.
And that’s what I have today. No waste! Yay!
Will I be serving up soup tonight? No.
No waste means a Friday fish and chip supper at Chez Wright.
The moral of the story? 😉
When trying to reduce food waste, sometimes it helps to just use up what you have. Whether that means adding unconventional ingredients to a dish, or simply bypassing conventional beliefs on what we eat and when.
After all, mixing it up can be fun. Who doesn’t love the occasional breakfast pancake for dinner?
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your blog link into the comments section below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment without a link.
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”
If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work

Gosh, that is an empty fridge! Well done! I usually find the satisfaction of knowing you are using things up and not making waste makes the cobbled-together dinners even tastier 🙂 It’s been school holidays here and I haven’t been keeping track of waste this week…oops! I bet there are some lettuce leaves in the crisper… 🙂

Thanks Clare! I MUST e-mail you! Boy I’m hopeless.
Now go check that crisper drawer 😉

Well done on such a smart decision. a choice you can feel good about is so worth it. Does the temptation to just call the number for takeout ever give away? it certainly hasn’t for me! lol… but at least I’m improving bit by bit, and making smarter choices surely does feel good. I was set to cobble together a dinner tonight of our mismatched leftovers… but hubby just informed me he would like to go out; the leftovers will still be there tomorrow I guess. He rarely wants to eat out so I’m relishing this.
I am right there with you about ignoring conventional beliefs about what is proper food for the time of day. the other week I ate a delicious salad for breakfast, complete with salmon and boiled egg… it was wonderful! dinner for breakfast, breakfast fir dinner… it’s all good! 🙂

I am confused. Is soup not a normal dinner option? There was nothing unusual about soup for dinner in my family…
Anyway, very impressed with how empty your fridge is! That is what I want mine to look like. My mom’s fridge was always full to bursting, but I think it is so difficult to know what you have and use it up that way.

I so agree – food is food! As long as you get your nutritional requirements over the day, it doesn’t matter how you do it!

The soup sounds delicious. I would be happy to eat soup every day for dinner.
