Food Waste Friday / Meet Our New Addition

October 4, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

It’s been a good week. Apart from another couple of homegrown tomatoes that bit the dust, there’s been zero-waste. (I’ve spared you the mouldy photo).

“Back of the net” as Alan Partridge would say.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love Alan Partridge? And how lucky am I? It is on Netflix. I also love Netflix. Anyhow, I digress.

As there’s very little waste to talk about today I thought I’d introduce our new addition.

(The new addition – from Aldi, none the less)

Lil’ Bill, my favourite slow-cooker, has taken semi-retirement. He was completely out of the game, but with a  little tinkering  is back working reduced hours. Whether Lil’Bill will survive the planned kitchen declutter that remains to be seen.

Work, on it, has already started…

IMG_3679

(Didn’t actually eliminate any books, just rearranged them!)

There are grand plans for the new, yet to be named, crockpot.

As we head toward Autumn/Fall, it’s the perfect time to cook up some oldies but goodies:

Slow cooked Broccoli and Stilton Soup

Slow cooked Chilli with Sundried Tomatoes

Slow cooked Vegetable Curry

As well as some new recipes…

And that’s what I’m looking for. Some new ideas. Do you have any?

Please feel free to share below, as well as dropping your Food Waste Friday link in.

 ————————————————————————————————————————————
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…

“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

Do you name all of your appliances? Is it harder to get rid of them if you name them?
Good work on the no waste this week. I had a handful of little things like stale popcorn for the squirrels that wasn’t too bad.

No not really. I have 3 slow cookers so it seemed easier to name them. However it’s got me thinking. I have started naming things. This coincides with my children arriving on planet Earth. Perhaps it’s just the mindset I’m in now As a Mom?

Yay for nearly no waste 🙂 I didn’t have such a good week with milk going to waste (again!) and a whole batch of congee that didn’t turn out so well.

I really like your slow cooker too. I wish Aldi would sell them here, the best kitchen buy I have had from Aldi is a cast iron frying pan, which I love.

Sorry to hear about your waste…
This is the first time I’ve seen slow cookers in Aldi. My previous ones were supermarket brands also.

What a terrible, terrible week for food waste. I really shouldn’t subject such nice fresh food to such a horrible fate!

I cooked Rogan Jhosh in my slow cooker this week and it was gorgeous. Only negative point was the recipe said it served four but not in my house – that’s teenage boys for you I guess! I’ll double the quantities next time. The recipe is from ‘I love my Slow Cooker’ by Beverley LeBlanc. I’ll post the full recipe if you’re interested.

I’ll google the recipe. Probably easier – save you time. I love Rogan josh. Did post a recipe here so will be good to see how it compares!

Had to toss some defrosted pea soup as we were already eating a lentil loaf and it was all too much fiber in the diet … I also gave up on some celery sticks. But I saved two tomatoes by cutting them up and putting them in my husband’s lunch bag with little packets of salt and pepper – he said he really enjoyed them, which was nice to hear. I feel optimistic going into this week 🙂 ……..Beautiful new slow cooker! Please let us know when you have named him/her!

Fairly decent week, as far as I can remember, but may have some this week, if I don’t find more uses for the eggplant. Our CSA gave us three large eggplants and so far, I have used half in two dishes, so have a lot more to go.
