It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Top Shelf – The usual spreads, baking fats and cheeses
Top Middle Shelf – Carrots, cucumber, peppers and grapes
Bottom Middle Shelf – Peppered mackerel, bagged salad and piccolo tomatoes
Bottom Shelf – Whole cauliflower, broccoli, 2 sausages and raspberry jam
Everything is fresh and ready to use. I’ll be slow cooking a cauliflower soup today. The salad and mackerel will make a great salad tonight for the Hubby and my anniversary meal. The Kids will have sausages and veggies.
No Aldi grocery shop for me today. I’m car-less.
I may pop out on Mary to grab some milk.
Unfortunately there is some waste. Grapes – deja vu! Rarely do I escape grape-waste.
There’s something else bothering me about this Friday fridge.
The amount of plastic and packaging.
I love Aldi, truly I do. The quality and price are second-to-none, But I’ve commented before about the amount of packaging – particularly the amount fruit and vegetables are wrapped in.
It’s bothering me. I’m becoming irritated by it once more.
I’m thinking it may be a farm shop this weekend for the fresh produce…
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work

I always think they put too many grapes in a package. If it were a little smaller, maybe the grapes could all be eaten before some go bad. I usually have the same problem you do with wasted grapes. As far as my food waste goes, I had to get rid of a little cucumber and tomato salad that got lost in the back of the refrigerator. Happy Anniversary.

Salad is difficult. As is grapes. Definitely less produce would mean less waste…

So agree with you abou the packaging. I sometimes see people disposing of it in Aldi, Tesco. Even though those people reduce their own household waste, it still does not mitigate the unnecessary plastic and paper waste companies produce.

There’s one supermarket that I have to stop at the paper recycling to dispose of the piles of receipts and bits of paper they give me at the till point also. Drives me potty!
I spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with packaging etc…

Love shopping the farmers market though I have yet to visit one this summer. Also didn’t manage to pop into any last summer as well – maybe I should work on this as summer’s almost over. Thank goodness the markets go into the fall season!
BTW: Mary’s a beaut! 🙂

I have the feeling next Friday’s going to be ugly. Regrettable waste in the fridge. When I throw stuff away, I ask for forgiveness. Thanks for lifting up a good practice. Peace, John

Good luck next Friday!

Oh yeah, extra plastic packaging bothers me too. I’m trying to corral my groceries in the fridge into containers, so I can (hopefully) do away with plastic packaging. However, I do find that wrapped up vegetables stay longer. Hmmmmm…..
Anyway, here’s my FWF post: http://giddytigers.com/2013/08/10/food-waste-friday-instant-coffee-instant-trash/

Yes, Giddy, a the packaged fruit and veg. usually is waxed to stay fresh longer. You can just imagine what the “wax” is.
simplybeingmum says
Pretty sure I have read apples should be soaked in a mixture containing vinegar to remove the coating before eating! Gosh sounds like a lot of work! I know when we do chocolate apples I have to wash in a very diluted washing up liquid to get it to stick to the fruit properly.

All of the supermarkets here are starting to package more and more fruit and veg in packaging, rather than having them loose. It’s annoying because of the unnecessary packaging, but also because, as a single person, sometimes I don’t want a whole bag!
Too bad about the grapes, I had some beans, milk and fruit waste this week, so not the best week for me: http://www.economiesofkale.com/2013/08/food-waste-saturday-beans/

We all have those weeks…but we also have our good weeks due to being mindful about waste! Better luck next week!
