Food Waste Friday / I’m Not A Morning Person

June 28, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

———————————————————————
As someone who is not a morning person**, I keep being told by those, who are, that it’s ‘the best part of the day’. So I thought I’d give it a try.

This post is scheduled to go live at 10am, so you wouldn’t have been aware how early I was at the keyboard. I’m wondering whether you’ll be able to tell by how it’s written, or whether it will have more errors?

(There could have been a critical error! I titled it No Waste Tastes Great (and wrote the entire post) instead of Food Waste Friday, almost forgetting it was my turn to host! Only when I went to cut and paste some text from my last NWTG post did I realise!)

The top shelf contains much more spread and cooking fats that usual. So much so it has spread to the shelf below. I’ve been busy in the kitchen this week – baking the perfect cupcake.

There’s cucumber, tomatoes, peppers and grapes still to eat. They will be included in a picnic for the Hubby and I. We’re hitting (a wet and soggy) Cannock Chase Forest this evening as we have Paloma Faith tickets. I get a night off cooking for the Kids as they are being otherwise entertained also.

On the bottom shelf – I have one olive and one baby beetroot to consume. I’m a little curious as to how just one of each remained in each jar? Regardless they can pop themselves on my lunch plate.

The door is holding milk, to be used over the weekend, a few limes and a couple of lemons. Time to chop and freeze to ensure a food-save.

Food-waste confession time. Not all the grapes that were in the fridge will be making it along to the concert this evening.

There are 2 punnets with some shriveled and frankly inedible red grapes at the bottom. Grapes frequently elude me on the eating-up-front. We did try them, but first-born commented they ‘tasted funny’. Off to the recycling bin they go, and a note to self is mentally written about trying harder with fruit/veg that has limited food-save options.

**I mentioned I’m Not a Morning Person.

See, there’s the mug to prove it. My second coffee is about to go in it!

As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

I totally get the “not a morning person” thing. Some people are and some people aren’t. I wonder why the always marry each other.

We did pretty well this week as far as waste goes, just a little cereal.

Doesn’t it figure that family members will always leave “just one” of something, so they won’t have to wash out the jar!

Paloma Faith on the forest, wow! I trust you had a wonderful time (even if it was raining?)

Thinking I may have been the culprit…which would figure, as I hate washing jars out! Paloma was great live. It was wet but in true brit style we got on with it regardless of the weather!

Morning person? What’s that?? 😉 For the lemons, you could always juice them and freeze the juice in ice cube trays and pull as needed for cooking etc 1 ice cube is approx 2tbsp.

My waste – leftover angry cookies letting their freak flag fly. Ick.

You’re welcome. You could also add a few cubes to a pitcher of water and let sit a few mins before serving 😉 Refreshing!

I didn’t used to be a morning person, now I am. It’s still strange to me and I’m still a bit fuzzy on how this happened.

    – The same thing happened to my grapes, about 1/2 c. worth.
    – Two half pints of raspberries were moldy the day after I bought them. The store implicitly agreed with me when they refunded the cost.

Success of the Week: Umami Soup.
I made a soup of different things I needed or wanted to use up: the oxtails that have been in the freezer for a year, the last 1/2 c. of barley, some sauteed mushrooms. I also wanted to try the mushroom stock recipe that recently crossed my desk. I cooked beans to add for additional protein and because they’re tasty. Then I got cooking. By the time I was done it was oxtail-mushroom-barley-bean soup, with soy and tomato paste for extra zest, a total of 5 high-umami ingredients. Ergo, Umami Soup. Or maybe just because oxtail mushroom barley bean soup is too long a title.

A very sad thing to add: 2-3 cups of beef jerky. Very, very sad. I cut the strips a little thick, the roommate didn’t dry them long enough, the meat got moldy. The total dollar cost wasn’t much because it was a cheap cut that the store sells frozen at a discount, because they freeze it a little before it expires … but still. Very, very sad.

I’m in training (to become a morning person) at the moment. Getting up an hour earlier. However it is taking me about that amount of extra-time to actually walk in a straight line and focus. I’m presuming it gets easier?
Had to Google umami – as always WilliamB – It’s been an education 😉
