It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!
———————————————————————
No Friday Fridge this week. After the embarrassment that was last week’s, I was expecting some collateral damage this week.
And some, I got.
However, not quite as bad as I had imagined.
The only other question mark is regarding this 2-week old buttercream I found hiding at the back.
It’s left over from the street art/banksy cake I recently made.
I know it’s recommended you only keep buttercream for up to 3 days.
To eat or not to eat, that is the question? I’m thinking it’s butter and icing sugar? And it’s been refrigerated? My logic suggests food-poisoning isn’t likely! What would you do?
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work p

I would eat it! 🙂 I am looking at a similar thing to you, grapes past their best and a few very sour strawberries..hmm. Still thinking… Have a great day and thank you for your blog. Can’t stop looking at it! 🙂 xxxxxxx
simplybeingmum says
Thanks Nell – that’s very kind!:-)
Hmmm maybe I should eat as penance and then maybe I wouldn’t waste grapes again – they’ve become my new cucumber (which was going to waste every.single.week!)

I would eat the frosting. I’ve eaten some pretty old frosting before with no problems. However, the frosting is not something that you really need to eat, so if you have any questions, you should probably throw it out.
I had a good week as far as waste goes. I had none. However, I’ve got some spinach that needs to be used and I’m going away for the weekend. We’ll see if it survives.
simplybeingmum says
Good news on your no waste. I’d opt for a sweet pot and spinach soup if you like it and the leaves last till you return.
Pretty sure the frosting’s okay. The butter is well in date and has been refrigerated and well icing sugar is…icing sugar?!? I reckon the 3 day thing may be to do with the quality/appearance of the frosting? Well we’re gonna find out! I have a birthday cake to make as a gift, I won’t use it for that. I’ll bake some cupcakes at the same time and use the old frosting on mine and the hubby’s.

I would eat it too 🙂 If the butter has gone rancid, you will be able to tell if you taste it. I had some homemade mayonnaise go to waste, which is really annoying because it was so difficult to make in the first place:

Oh my you are one brave lady! I get scared every time I think about making mayo or yogurt… just don’t think I have it in me!

I always go via taste and smell to see if something’s gone.
I’ve decided to do hummus popsicles to reduce my food waste

Now that I gotta see – I love an ‘outside the box’ recipe!

It’s probably too late but your grapes and blueberries could have gone in a smoothie! I always put questionable fruit into smoothies, they had all manner of ills.
cheryl says
hide, they hide all manner of ills.
simplybeingmum says
Now grape in smoothies just does not appeal. But I’ve been wrong about things before, so as penance I’m going to try it. they haven’t yet hit the recycling bin. Thanks for the suggestion – who dares wins eh? 🙂

I am paranoid about food poisoning – ever since I learned that some stuff doesn’t look or smell any different if it’s good or if it’s very, very bad (botulism, for example) – yet I would still use that icing if I needed it. Like you said, it’s butter and icing sugar, and either one alone would last longer than two weeks. If you used milk or cream in it, those might have had time to go off, depending on how near their expiration date they were when you made the icing, but in that case it should have a sour milk smell.
Having said that, I never actually NEED icing, especially when I am trying to lose weight 🙂 Your situation may be quite different!
simplybeingmum says
yep I’m going for it. Here’s a snippet of info to make you even more paranoid. There has been a report issued in the UK this month stating that bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant (due to overuse of antibiotics and lack of research into development of new ones) and unless action is taken bugs are going to be a bigger threat than much of what is on the govt’s risk list (highly paraphrased). Ecoli was one bug that was mentioned – and that’s a killer.
Jo H. says
Ack!!
You’d think I could lose a lot of weight by being so fearful of this, wouldn’t you now!

First comment here but been enjoying and challenged by for a while.
Fortnightly (or thereabouts) I make a Frugal Friday Soup (just named!). Base ingredients: ALWAYS oven roasted butternut squash, onions, Thai red chilli paste and stock. I like to use celery if lurking in fridge + whatever else needs using up. This week I’ll be adding some sad: salad leaves, 2 tbsps leftover ratatouille & tomatoes. Usually make 6/8 portions and store some in fridge for early use and some in bowls/mugs in freezer. Always different but always delicious!

The BBC suggest keeping it for 2 weeks http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/buttercream_icing
But if it’s just after 2 weeks it might be ok? I tend to be pretty careful when it comes to food hygiene. No waste I can remember this week! But it might just be that I am tired and can’t actually remember!!

Found your blog in 2014. My Ladies (Chickens) would chase me across the yard if I tried to waste yummy grapes, overripe bananas or super sweet frosting. Into the slop bucket it goes! Mix it , mash it. My wonderful ladies transform it into Eggs! It’s a shame you can’t have ladies in the city. Have a wonderful week.
