Food Waste Friday / A Good Week

March 8, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

A good week here! (taken 6.30am – poor light!)

There’s broccoli to use up, another slow cooked soup on its way…

IMG_0867

A few grapes and peppers – which will accompany a cheese and cracker lunch tomorrow. My crock-pot (bottom shelf) contains bolognese for dinner. (thanks to Mrs Fenton for reminding me to tell you all don’t put a crock pot in a cooker after it’s been refrigerated. In fact I never reheat in a pot – I was being lazy and popped it in rather than transferring to another container. This bolognese will be reheated in a saucepan on the hob tonight!)

Apart from that a ball of salt dough. Not to be eaten… left over from making cards for tonight’s fundraiser. The Kid’s can use up the leftovers this weekend.

IMG_2914

30 cards finished and ready to go. However I still have 36 cupcakes to pipe and a 21st street art/graffiti cake to decorate. Feeling a little pressured…hence the early post today.

I’m hoping I can replicate these…

Better get busy!

As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

I had no waste this week. However, I have a lot of stuff in my fridge, so I’m going to have to be diligent this week if I want to continue with this.
Thanks for the reminder about the crock. I don’t put in back in the pot either, but it’s good to be reminded all the same in case I get the urge someday to save a few steps.

Yay for a no waste week 🙂 Unfortunately I was as vigilant with my broccoli this week and it went mouldy and slimy 🙁 But I did have quite a few saves this week:

My food waste consists of a little leftover tofu egg salad. We are experimenting with new ways to eat tofu. It was ok but not a recipe I will repeat. 😉 just want to say how much I enjoy your blog Jo. I always look forward to my weekly updates.

This week’s victim: a UFO – unidentifiable food object. Literally a mystery. 😉

    Hi Jo,
those cards turned out simply adorable!

So far, so good, in my kitchen this week. But I do have a bit of cabbage to use today, and some leftover sweet potatoes and cooked pumpkin , maybe 1/2 cup total. I’ll combine those in a breakfast pastry for tomorrow morning. I got all three of my kids and husband to grab a banana this morning on the way out the door, so our surplus of rapidly ripening bananas is down to a reasonable amount.

You know, it does take attention and diligence to keep from wasting. I think some folks just don’t have the time to constantly check what needs using up, with work schedules, late meetings, kids here and there. It’s not easy.

I second Lili, above – it takes time and attention to keep from having waste. And sometimes it takes knowing yourself, too. I thought about buying a frozen turkey this week because they were on sale. But I know that I usually have waste with a turkey because I don’t get the meat taken off soon enough and it languishes in the fridge until it’s “iffy” and then it goes in the compost rather than take a chance on eating it. So I let the turkey bargain go by, and bought a smaller amount of pork which I know will get used up.

And this is all because of your blog – you make me think about what’s going to be in the fridge a week from now, not simply how much I’ll buy right now to put in it!

I love those cards. They have such clean lines, and very attractive.

    Finally, a good week!

    Wasted:
    – 1/5 of a sweet pepper

    Good Saves:
    – the very inexpensive blueberries didn’t taste like much which meant they weren’t being eaten. I froze 1.5c. for the ever-popular blueberry muffins, and used the remaining 2c. for blueberry ice cream. Turns out tasteless blueberries don’t taste any more like blueberries in ice cream than they did out of hand: I ended up with blueberry-colored vanilla ice cream – very tasty blueberry-colored vanilla ice cream.

Yay for a good week.. I’d love to make ice-cream but I have some mental block about dairy. It’s the same with yogurt – I just feel like its actually made from fairy magic and I wouldn’t be able to recreate. I used to feel like that about cooking rice, but there’s a saying ‘practice makes perfect!’ – maybe I’m just lazy. I’ve some blueberries hanging around so….
