It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

No Waste Tastes Great today!
Everything has a destination.
There are peppers, eggplant/aubergine and tomatoes which will be slow cooked into a vegetable curry for dinner. in the glass container, on the bottom shelf, there’s leftover bolognese for First-Born who doesn’t like curry. Apart from that I have a handful of grapes, which will be eaten over the weekend.
All nice and tidy – just how I like my fridge.
Just a few blueberries and this to use up:
I’m thinking blueberry muffins adapted from my naked strawberry muffin recipe, and the pineapple will be a great addition to the fat-free cakes I bake. Maybe a carrot, and a mixed fruit version? Luckily I have eggs to hand.
There’s going to be some serious baking going on at Chez Wright.
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work properly.

Looks like no waste in your neat and tidy refrigerator. Congratulations! I had no waste also this week. I have made a list of things in the fridge to use up, so hopefully, I won’t have any waste next week.

Yay for no waste – about to pop over to yours…

Jo – there is a great American muffin recipe for “Morning Glory” muffins. They originated on the island of Nantucket at the Morning Glory Cafe. Anyway – these muffins have shredded carrots, shredded zuchinni, shredded apple, pineapple, and raisins in them and are super delicious. I cut the oil by substituting pineapple juice for at least 1/3 and use zuchinni for half the shredded coconut.
just a suggestion for using up produce!

Fantastic Libby – think I may give them a try – will post over at FB results!

Great job on using it all up!
I’m currently sifting through your site for inspiration for a sweet to bake for this weekend. You always have such tempting looking treats! I like to have something special to begin the weekend with, and coming up with nothing! Getting over a stomach bug makes it hard to think about cooking or baking.
simplybeingmum says
Hmmm – my suggestion would be the cheesecake if you are looking for something sumptuous! It is good, and I’m not a cheesecake fan normally!
Hope you are now feeling better. The sickness bug hit me last week and lasted 48 hours. Pretty sure I’ve had my fill of illness for 2013. That’s the last time I ever congratulate myself on a germ-free 12 months. Within a week of saying how lucky I’d been in 2012 I’d got flu, then a virus then a sickness bug!
Lili@creativesavv says
Hi Jo,
Thank you for the cheesecake suggestion. That does look yummy. I think I’ll do that for Sunday dinner’s dessert. I happen to have all that I need on hand for cheesecake. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself.
For the beginning of the weekend, I went with one of my mom’s recipes for a sweet bun for Saturday breakfast. Oh, these are gooey and good (having one with my coffee right now!)
simplybeingmum says
I love a bun! Reckon this year is the year I attempt Hot Cross Buns!

I almost had to throw away some yogurt but I scraped the mold off the top and ate the rest.

Now that’s a save!

Had a bit of tomato sauce, two lasagna noodles, and a half a bag of bread crusts that I put in the compost this week. I took sick within a day of making the sandwiches that caused the crusts, so I didn’t like the thought of using them up. They would likely have been fine, but I wasn’t going to chance it. I noticed your comment about all your sickness so far this year – poor you! I was feeling sorry for myself for getting sick for the first time in three years! I’ll just go away and stop whining now 🙂
simplybeingmum says
Not bad… and considering you were ill, pretty good I’d say. You aren’t whining! Being ill is a pain – and when you never get ill and it hits, it’s hard to take. I literally had been germ-free for 14 months and then consistently fell ill. Probably due to the nasty bout of flu over Christmas – maybe immunity low? I’m determined to be fighting fit for the rest of the year!

It was a sad, sad day at Chez WilliamB.
The Bad: I wasted chicken. That it was happy chicken increased the financial burden.
The Not-So-Bad (I can’t bring myself to call it The Good): Most was the waste was the bones. I managed, barely, to get the meat into the freezer. I’ll have to be very careful not to let that meat sit in the fridge for very long.
The Ugly: There was a lot of usable meat on the bones that I hadn’t stripped off yet. I could’ve used that meat in pot pie, or hash, or meat muffins, or any other use that called for bits of meat rather than whole pieces.
simplybeingmum says
I love the term ‘Happy Chicken’ (not a term we use in UK – or at least I haven’t heard it used – I have seen Happy Eggs branded). You tried to make the save – okay so not a full save, but pretty close!
WilliamB says
AFAIK I made up the term but that isn’t to say that others haven’t made it up as well.
Since the waste was all my fault in the first place – I was lazy – I don’t feel that I deserve much credit.

Well ‘Happy Chicken’ has now been adopted here…

Not too bad here, although I thought of you when I threw away some icing. I shared the tales of our pasta making experiments, which have been helping to use up leftovers! Hope you are feeling better.

Hey Sarah… I’ll be popping on over to yours. I’m fine now thank you…just a bad run of germs over here for some reason. No more talk of illness! Onwards and upwards!

Wasted a jug of apple juice even though it hadn’t actually gone bad. There’s a good reason. Promise. http://roadnotchosen.blogspot.ca/2013/02/wasting-food-instead-of-my-health.html

Your post was very interesting. I picked up a sickness bug a week or so back, and the worst part of it was the strange sensations in my legs – I couldn’t sleep because of them. Now I wonder – dehydration maybe?

While I can’t say my fridge looks quite as nice as yours, I had very little waste this week! I love this accountability, it’s really helping us to do better around here. 🙂 http://preparedtoeat.com/wasteful-wednesday-220/

Hi Jamie – yes accountability is good – you do what you say in most cases!
I’ve copied my response to your question over at your blog here…as I thought it was a useful bit of info:
“I use broken crisps (chips in US) as a topping – like breadcrumbs. So it would top a pasta bake, salmon pie, lasagne… anything really! I also do it with cereal that is left at the bottom of the packet.”
