It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Top Shelf – Spreads, fats, garlic, cheese and yogurt – all with life left in them
Top Middle Shelf – Grapes and a pepper – to be eaten over the weekend
Door – Fresh eggs and milk
There’s food waste to confess. I’ve taken it out of the fridge for the photo. It’s time to give myself a talking to, me thinks.
There’s cauliflower, pastry and bacon to be disposed of. They are beyond redemption. I’m not proud of myself. Not. One. Little. Bit.
Since the start of 2013 my food-waste has definitely been on the increase. I’m not sure why? As my routine hasn’t changed. Maybe that’s the issue? Familiarity can breed complacency.
It may well be time for a shake-up. In fact a revamp of the routine is on the cards.
Watch this space!
Let’s end on a more cheery note. Dinner tonight will be slow-cooked vegetable curry for the Hubby, Second-born and I. I’ll also be prepping a lasagne for First-born – she’s not a curry fan. I’ll freeze what’s leftover for next Friday.
Needless to say it won’t be a shop-bought ready-meal lasagne. I’m feeling rather reassured this week about my practice of cooking-from-scratch after all the UK headlines. In fact I may actually opt for soya mince instead this week.
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

That is a lot of waste for you, but your refrigerator looks great like always. Sounds like there is going to be some good eating at your house tonight.
I got rid of squishy tomatoes at my house, but otherwise things went pretty well.

Sounds like you had a good week!

I missed out on posting my food waste this week due to a migraine, but I think we’ve done ok. I can’t believe bacon went to waste! I’m pretty sure we’ve never ever had leftovers of that before. 🙂 I agree that we do need to shake up the routine every now and then to see better results.

Hope you are feeling better now? Yes bacon – shocking…in my defence (not that there is a defence) I didn’t buy it. It came into the house outside of the meal-plan and that’s always a recipe for disaster!

I have a wrinkly potato in the fridge which will have to go out – unusual for me as I normally plan to use up everything before it gets to that state! I tend to use Quorn mince for lots of things, I get the frozen version and it’s very versatile. We don’t really eat much meat, lots of my creations are vegetarian with tins of beans thrown in! I used to use chickpeas, but on the last two occasions I had them I got an upset stomach the next day, so will have to avoid them for now.

Hi Rebecca – yep I used quorn for yesterday’s lasagne. Leah isn’t sure about it though – said she prefers beef – she still ate it!

Don’t beat yourself up too much, we all have bad weeks 🙁 I had a bit of a disaster this week trying to make homemade mayonnaise and eventually ended up tossing the mix rather than wasting more ingredients on trying to fix it.

That looks like a tasty lasagne 🙂

Sometimes you need to know when to call it a day. particularly when potentially using more ingredients that will go to waste. I’ve never been very confident about trying mayo out or yogurt. There’s something about dairy that intimidates me a little!

Wow – wasted bacon? Is that even possible?! LOL
I lost a pom 🙁 I bought it to try as I’ve never had one – juice yes, fruit no. I guess I’ll have to buy another one down hte road.

Had to google “pom” – because that’s what Brits abroad are called. You learn something everyday (pom means ‘prisoner of mother England’ linked back to immigrants going across to Australia). It also means pomegranate! I should have guessed really!

I agree with your reply above to Jamie – when things come into the house outside the meal plan, it sets you up to have waste. I have found this to be so true. At one time we would have eaten the extras, but I try to avoid that now because I am trying to eat in a healthy and restrained way. And the things that usually come into our house are things like a cake with whipped cream that doesn’t freeze well 🙂 Ah well, we’re in a new week now!
