It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great
Click here to find out more about my Friday routine
Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Top Shelf – Cheese, spreads, garlic and kiddy yoghurt
Top Middle Shelf – Leftover slow-cooked ham from yesterday
Bottom Middle Shelf – Mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, 3 peppers and a courgette (zucchini)
Bottom Shelf – Half a bag of pre-packed salad and half a jar of sundried tomatoes
Door – Eggs, Milk and OJ
Those who follow No Waste Tastes Great may be surprised at the amount of food residing in my fridge on a Friday morning. This is what happens when I don’t meal plan properly. Note to self – regardless of circumstances take time to plan meals!
However as always there’s a No Waste Tastes Great plan!
The top shelf’s all in date, as are the eggs, and the sundried tomatoes will be used next week in a 3 bean chilli. The ham will be eaten today. The Kids are having ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch (I’ll have cheese only as I’m no longer eating meat). It’ll be ham, scrambled egg and veggies for the Kid’s dinner.
I’m pretty overloaded with vegetables, so a lasagne is on the cards. Last Saturday I nipped into a supermarket I don’t normally frequent and grabbed some emergency ‘make it quick’ supplies. A couple of jars will get used today. I can stretch the ingredients to make 2 lasagnes. The Hubby and I will have one for dinner and the other one will be frozen. The salad will be served with dinner tonight.
There is some potential waste however. I’m not sure what to do with this:
It’s a remaining small portion of leftover 3 bean chilli. It’s a week old. Is it edible? I’m not sure? If it is I’ll have it for lunch, if not it’s headed for the food recycling bin. I’ll have a think (aka google) and make a decision.
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…
Keep reading Guys… I have a giveaway.
The nice people of Aldi would like to send one of my readers a hamper of Easter goodies. So how did this come about? Well I’ve recently started shopping at Aldi, and have been impressed by the quality of their products. I’ve mentioned Aldi here a few times, and they’ve contacted me. Now I know I like their chocolate and we’ve already sampled a few of the Easter products at Chez Wright. Dan’s favourites are the chocolate bunny lollies. So it’d be great to let one of you try their goodies out instead.
This is what Aldi will be sending out (in their words):
“A hamper of great-value treats from Aldi’s Easter range, perfect for all the family. You’ll receive a selection of edible goodies such as Dairyfine Milk Chocolate Eggs and Choceur Chocolate Bunny, as well as the luxurious Choceur Flame Egg.”
Please be aware that I am in no way compensated for this giveaway and would never mention a brand or product unless I myself shopped there or bought it. That’s not my style! I blog for my dear readers and myself, not for manufacturers and retailers.
You must live in the UK I’m afraid… hampers are heavy things to courier!
If you’d like to be entered into the giveaway (there’s only one hamper – sorry Guys!) then please pop a comment in below – a simple ‘enter me I’m from the UK’ will suffice or please feel free to say more, it’s the great comments from you Guys that make this blog. Please make sure it’s obvious you want to be entered – thanks!
A winner will be randomly chosen on Sunday (cut off for comment entries is 12pm Sunday 25 March) and it’ll be posted over at Facebook and back on this post. I have an idea on how to do the draw, no guarantees, but if I can pull it off it may be worth a watch on Facebook.
No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.
I’m a newcomer to your blog but a diehard Aldi (and Lidl – though I probably shouldn’t be mentioning that in an Aldi give-away comp!) shopper for many years!
You’re in the draw if you’re from the UK Sarah – presume you are? Please confirm – thanks! So glad you found my blog 🙂 Feel free to share any recommendations here, whether it be an Aldi giveaway or not – life is a constant learning process…the more info the better…

Hi Jo, can I enter please, I’m in the UK. By the way, I’ve just managed to get hold of a copy of Simplify your Life from the library. I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m feeling very inspired so thank you for introducing it to me, I intend to start my first snag list this week!
Hi Emma – great to have you comment! You’re in the draw. The book you’ve picked up was a great start to a simpler life. I’m so glad you have checked it out. I spoke with the author about a year ago and asked Naomi if she’d guest post here. She did say yes at the time, your comment has made me consider getting back in touch and see if she has time to take a look at it. Please do come back and let me know how you are getting on with it all….
(number 4)
Oo a post guest post from Naomi would be great. Thank you for adding me and I’ll let you know how I’m getting on.
I’ll see what I can do!

Hi Jo, I found your blog a few weeks ago and have been trying (badly) to follow your example! I live in the Uk and have been using Aldi a lot more since finding you. Just got to do my menu plan before I head off there this afternoon.
Make sure you eat also before heading off! Hunger creates impulse purchases! have a great afternoon and you’re in the draw…

Hi Please enter me, I’m from the UK. Just starting out trying to cut costs as have given up work to go back to uni. Finding your blog really helpful – have already done my Fridge Friday (ok so I did it on Wednesday as I shop on a Thursday – but it still counts!). Not yet tried shopping at Aldi, but if you and others recommend it, I might give it a go sometime.
Hi fellow Jo! A Wednesday Fridge definitley counts – so glad to hear you’re trying it out. Regarding Aldi I wasn’t convinced. I’ve spoken about this before. Check out this comment thread if interested https://simplybeingmum.com/2011/12/05/my-first-ever-grocery-trip-to-aldi-the-verdict/#comments
Basically I didn’t understand the branding. I think I do now. This is totally my opinion and Aldi may view it differently, but they seem to take the market leader and then emulate the product. The quality is very good and so is the price. As with any store there are some things that I’d avoid. However I’ll give you an example. The Hubby and Kids like Chocolate mousse – I don’t make this. The Aldi one at 45p for 4 is fantastic – really great quality. My old supermarket (I won’t name name’s) does one at the same price-point. No comparison. I don’t know why, because if Aldi can do it, I’m presuming they can also. Their more expensive own-brand one is better quality. The other thing I like about Aldi is the lack of variety. I can do a full shop in 20 minutes, and there’s no brain ache trying to choose brands, best deal etc… what you see is what you get.
Glad you commented and you are in the draw!

Wow, you hold a giveaway and suddenly I’m not the first commenter! lol I’m in too, would be nice to try some Aldi stuff – their stores aren’t that convenient for me normally.
That’s a pretty full fridge, but the plan is sounding pretty good. I’m not sure about the leftovers, I usually only let them go around 3-4 days but given it’s a vegetarian dish I’m not sure! I’d probably bin them and remember to eat or freeze sooner next time. 😉
My fridge is doing good, even managed to get the flatmate to eat the last of his ready meals (icky!) from the freezer this week. Lots of pears though, as I got a tray marked down at M&S. Need to figure out something to do with those.
I know Lauren – where were you? 😉 Glad to see a reappearance of the flatmate – was starting to miss his lack lustre attempts to eat up his foodstuffs!
The beans – not sure – I think they’re headed for the recycling bin. I’ve got a bit of a thing about accidentally poisoning people, this includes through chemicals etc… I’m quite careful even though I advocate reduction in food waste. Kidney Beans have always freaked me out slightly – I must have heard something as a child that stuck in mind about the lectins in them. When I was a teenager my parents left me in charge of the dog whilst they went on holiday. I don’t know why I gave the dog some leftover kidney beans, but I do remember sitting up all night making sure she was still breathing. Probably not worth risking them for my own state of mind this afternoon.
Popping you in the draw Hun! p.s the pears – presume stewing is the way to go, I’m not a pear fan so struggling to think of anything else!
(number 7)
Hmm, you could be on to something with stewing. They would probably go nicely with the tins of rice pudding that are bugging me in the storecupboard. Maybe flatmate even ate some since I last checked, anything’s possible. 😉
I had to go look about the beans. I knew they could be considered toxic, but didn’t know details. Apparently boiling them for at least 10 minutes reduces this but since it was slow cooked so perhaps not at a high enough heat, I’m definitely on board with recycling. Even if everything was fine, your sanity is definitely worth more than a portion of beans!
Now I have an image in my head of flatmate frantically eating rice pud! Bizarre, I’m having hallucinations before I even try the beans!
Ref the beans – I boiled them before slow-cooking. I am that paranoid. They are being disposed of though, I can’t do it. Perhaps I’m slightly kidney bean phobic? I know you can have bananaphobia (that’s the correct term also – says what it is on the tin eh? No strange Latin term in that one! – wondering if that’s because they didn’t have bananas back then? Hmmm better Google)…

Great news Claire – there’s some good products in there. The cheese is a good price and good quality. They do a selection, I like the wensleydale and cranberry the best I think. You’re entered!
ps – just been across to your blog – looking good! Have commented. The only problem I have sometimes is it throws me out when I try and comment through WordPress. Don’t know whether it’s just me – it may well be I can be a bit dumb! Just a heads up!

Jo, even though I’m not in the Uk, I have several very dear friends who are – could I enter on their behalf? As far as Aldi, they have stores in the US (where I am) also, and are known for their low prices and high quality. In fact, I will be grocery shopping later today and will pick up beans for the 3 bean chili recipe you posted earlier this week and firing up my slow cooker. Have a wonderful weekend 🙂
Susan – You’re fantastic! I love someone who (sorry to coin a cliche but…) thinks outside the box (or in this case hamper). Of course you can nominate someone to receive on your behalf. Boy why didn’t I think of that??????
Do let me know how the chilli goes ((be that one ‘L’ (US) or two (UK) ;-)))? You have a good one yourself (you clever lady!*kicking myself*)

Enter me i’m from the uk!! We have had emergency hospital visits lately so we have lots to use ups and potential waste due to grabbing the chippy on the way home!!
Off topic, what happened with the boots???
Sharron x
Hope nothing too serious? I’ve too had a couple of Chippy stops of late – thank goodness we have them in every town/village over here!
The boots are still with me. They’ve been lovingly polished and retained. I am going to keep an eye out (as you suggested) as the sales kick in, but knowing me it’ll take so long to decide to make the purchase they’ll be out of stock.
Your name’s in the hat!

Claudia has been having pain after hear meals, then on Thusrday she was sent home from school in agony, we took her too casualty suspecting an appendicitis, however they think it’s either her gallbladder or a virus in her Liver. We have too have a scan to confirm. Feel really sorry for her. Exciting for her though as cbbc filmed her (and me eek) for a new programme in the autum. Thanks for asking!!
Sharron x
Oh dear! I really wish her a speedy recovery. Please let me know what the outcome is? Very exciting regarding cbbc, give me a heads up when it’s going to be shown. I’d love to see it! All the best with everything x

Please enter me in the giveaway, I’m in the ~Uk. I shop at aldi quite a lot, I find their fruit and veg very well priced but you need to go in the morning to find the best quality, by afternoon the grapes, strawberries and bags of salad are looking sad.
Hi Lynn – I was at Aldi bright and early this morning and the produce as you say was looking pretty good! Couldn’t get a butternut squash though – disappointing! You’re in the draw!

I won’t enter the draw as I live in Canada and do not know anyone in the UK 🙂
But I’m trying to keep my fridge report public to keep me honest. I had a big waste this week – a small roast of beef that should have kept well enough for a few days in the fridge but the few days suddenly turned into 6 days and although I’ve used similar items before, this one had started to turn. It cost less than $6 but I felt very badly discarding it. Live and learn. If I hardly have time to eat and sleep, a 2-3 hour slow pot roast is probably not going to get cooked 🙁
It just occurred to me that a slow cooker would have solved that problem … no stove to watch, and not much heat generated (we had two days of very hot weather here – totally unusual – and that was another reason I didn’t want to have the oven on for a prolonged time).
Hi Jo – You could nominate me? Only joking! 😉
A slow cooker would most certainly have solved that problem – there’s a great recipe for ‘pulled beef’ my brother gave me (I’d post on FB if of interest). Lot’s of flavour. Even if you don’t eat as a main meal you could use for lunches – that’s what I did with a ham this week. The slow cooker doesn’t give off much heat at all!
Ha ha! I thought of that after I posted my comment – you like in the UK (obviously) and I KNOW YOU!!!
I don’t do Facebook 🙁 Would you consider doing a post here sometime?
typo – not “you like” but “you live” in the UK
ack
Yes of course… I’ll get him to remind me of the recipe and make it here – probably first week of April!
