Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Okay so I had promised no more rubbish quality photo’s now that I have a decent camera…however…I’m still not sure how to use the software! It has been so busy that I haven’t had chance to sit down and work it all out.
My new years resolution to you dear readers is from 1st Jan 2012 to improve the quality of the images on the blog!
Anyhow onto business:
Top Shelf – Spreads, Fats, Cheese and Garlic
Top Middle Shelf – Bread and Butter Pud, Pork Pie, Red Cabbage, Pate and Brie
Bottom Middle Shelf – 2x Emergency Pizzas, Grapes, Carrots, 1/2 Lime, Onion
Bottom Shelf – Homemade Pickled Beetroot and Chutney
Door – Eggs, OJ, Milk, Cranberry Juice and Custard
The plan?
The bread and butter pud will be eaten tonight with the remaining custard.
Absolutely everything else that needs using up (apart from the eggs) will be joining this lot:
All of the above will be making an appearance on our dining room table tomorrow evening for a New Year’s Eve Open House at Chez Wright. (Even the carrot and onion will be chopped and made into something edible with the cheese and grapes)
(I’ll be posting some photo’s on Facebook tomorrow)
Did you notice our new friend amongst the leftovers?
Okay so this little chap could be described as clutter…but I’m actually quite taken with him! He arrived Christmas Day and as of yet I have no plans to take him on a one-way trip to the charity shop. Let’s see how long he lasts π
My dilemma this week is the eggs, as they are the only potential waste (not bad considering the time of year…). There are 6 left and the expiry was 28th Dec. I’m going to do some googling and soul-searching (as well as go back to an informative comment left by Dar on a previous post).
It may be omelette for the Hubby and I tonight – jury out at the moment. The Kids are having beans on toast (as may the Hubby and I if I’m not brave enough to try the eggs).
How’s your fridge looking at the end of the year? Ready for a fresh start in 2012 or does it need to go on a New Year diet?

Hello new friend! I noticed a lot of meerkat related items in the shops this year. Not sure why, but he’s cute none the less.
The eggs should have plenty of life left in them, have you tried the float test? Just went back to the previous post and saw that this is what was suggested – it really works! I find I can get away with at least a week out of date, usually two. Especially since they’re kept in the fridge. You could also separate and freeze them for your next batch of meringue (and custard!) – but google this, as I think you might to whip them up a bit with a touch of sugar for consistency. I’d be happy with an omelette though, yum. That might be the end result for the eggs and some chorizo in our fridge, come to think of it.
Otherwise, our fridge isn’t too bad. I picked up a yellow stickered pack of casserole veg in M&S which needs using soon – it is leeks, carrots, swede and new potatoes. I have some diced pork so going to make some kind of pork and cider stew tomorrow or Sunday. Should be good. Also picked up a pack of carrots, going to just slice those up for snacks as DH loves them.
Enjoy the open house! It’ll be quiet one for us, we don’t enjoy going out for New Year.

Have a lovely New Year Lauren! I did indeed do the float test and they passed with flying colours so we ate them! π

MMMMM i love walnut whips!! Jo i always use eggs past their date, as my mum tells me all the time, they never had dates on them in the war (not that she was even born)
Our fridge was restocked today, with healthy foods i might add. Way too much munching on sweets around here.
Our new year is like Lauren’s, quiet and just us, enjoy your open house!!!

If you want to know if the eggs are fit to eat, put each in a deep bowl of water : if they sink to the bottom, them are fine. If they float, you DON’T want to eat them, or even crack them open (they’ll smell dreadful).

Thanks Ann – I did indeed do the float test and they passed – we ate them – no problems so far… Have a lovely New Year π

At least on this side of the pond eggs are good for a couple of weeks past the printed date. Hard boiling them will give you a couple extra days as well.
I’m impressed that you’ve kept up your efforts during the holiday season. I don’t think I wasted more than usual but there sure wasn’t a whole lot of healthy eating going on.
simplybeingmum says
Definitely some unhealthy eating went on here also! Boy how many mince pie’s can one human eat – way too much extra eating to combat that potential waste has been going on here… I’ll have a whole new waist problem of my own if I keep it up!? Anyhow…back in the groove!
Great news on the lack of waste over at yours… Happy New Year π
