No Waste Tastes Great 16 September 2011

September 16, 2011 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great

There’s no doubt this week I kept my ‘Eye On The Prize’, there wasn’t a day where I wasn’t inspecting the fridge and checking out what was to be used up in anticipation of No Waste Tastes Great. This was partly due to the fact that this week I didn’t do a grocery shop and had one of my ‘use it up’ weeks.

I’ve shared the way I meal plan and shop already on this blog, but it has since changed. I’ll be posting about it soon having recently reduced my grocery spend by at least 25% a week.

What impact did this have on my Friday Fridge this week?

So it’s toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches at lunch for my beautiful Son and I, and then an omelette with frozen veggies for him at dinner.

For the first week in an eternity it will be a takeaway for Date Night at Chez Wright. I’ve resisted the temptation to grab a few ingredients on the way home from the school run for a slow cooked curry, after the Hubby commented wistfully earlier this week that it had been ‘AGES since we’d had a takeaway’…

The reason for the total lack of waste this week is due to not doing a shop and really thinking about what could be used up and how. Earlier in the week we had a lovely donation of some ripe homegrown tomatoes from a work colleague. They were sitting in the fridge yesterday, and inspiration struck.

Last night we had slow cooked tomato soup and cheese and tomatoes on toast.

It was the first time I’d made it without lentils and we really enjoyed it. One portion even travelled with me on the school run this morning as I gifted it to a friend who has started Weight Watchers. It’s less than 1 point per serving!

How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Are we all mean and lean or is it fit to burst?

(p.s if you want to see my fridge after my weekly shopย check out my page on Facebook)

That tomatoes on toast looks sooooo yummy right now. Congrats on your super duper clean fridge. Mine isn’t like that at all.

Thanks Amanda! The original inspiration behind the meal last night really is due to the fact that neither the Hubby or I particularly like tomatoes, well not raw anyway. The toms on toast were particularly lovely (grilling always works for me), probably due to them being homegrown, and the fact they didn’t cost a penny will always make them extra tasty ๐Ÿ™‚
p.s – I believe the key to a clean minimal fridge is meal planning… don’t buy any more than you absolutely need!
      Have a lovely weekend

I’m an advocate of meal planning too. It just seems with our family (5) that it still isn’t ever that empty. The spare fridge downstairs is currently empty besides ice cubes and bottled water.

I might add that the gluten free thing adds to fridge stock. Our pantry is always sparse due to the lack of purchasing packaged goods.

I was never a fan of tomatoes either but have come around after eating home grown with basil, mozzarella, and sea salt.

Wow that is one empty fridge! Even on my non-grocery shopping weeks my fridge has never been that empty. I’m seriously impressed! ๐Ÿ™‚

      Thanks Elizabeth ๐Ÿ™‚
You may notice that I use the compartment at the bottom for condiments, ketchup, BBQ, jerk marinade, marmalade etc… so that helps it to look uncluttered. I don’t include them in NWTG as they always get used up. I also had half a carton of milk and some OJ in the door.
In fact your comment has inspired me! I am going to post a photo of my Fridge now (on Facebook) after my Friday PM grocery shop so there’s a comparison… Considering how small my fridge is, it never really looks that full. But when I only spent ยฃ50 on groceries this week (I’m working hard to spend less), I guess it won’t…

Cooking with just what’s on hand can be a very creative process. I remember before our last move when I was trying to use everything up, we had some very interesting dinners.

You’re right June – it is creative and also great fun. Not everything works out – ahem I remember a very unsuccessful celery gratin a while back… but still you live and learn! ( toss and turn :-))
