Here in the UK we do not typically celebrate Thanksgiving.
Although interested in history, I don’t claim to know all about how the holiday came into being, but I do know that today is very important in North America.
Us Brits may not celebrate Thanksgiving as the norm, but it seems it originated over here, rooted in English traditions dating back to the Protestant reformation in the reign of Henry VIII. We had Thanksgiving days. Interestingly one such day was linked to the failure of the Gunpowder plot and that evolved into Guy Fawkes Day. There are also links to harvest festival. Both of these traditions were still strongly upheld as I was growing up, but seem to be fading a little. Thank you Wikipedia for filling in some gaps for me!
Talking of holidays, I love Christmas, who doesn’t? For the record my favourite holiday is Easter – but I could grow very fond of Thanksgiving also.
(And I’m not the only one, according to Wikipedia 1 in 6 Britons now celebrate Thanksgiving).
Why?
Because I like to give thanks. I like to show appreciation, and gratitude.
We all have so much to be grateful for and to say thank you for.
Life isn’t perfect, but it’s not a disaster either. It’s all about perspective and attitude.
Choose an attitude of gratitude.
Today I’d like to give thanks. A huge thank you for everything in life, because without the lows how would we recognise and appreciate the highs?
What do you give thanks for today?
