It’s Friday Guys – time for Food Waste Friday – officially over at The Frugal Girl’s today.
As always on a Friday I follow my No Waste Tastes Great routine.
Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Top Shelf – Olive oil spread, jam and yoghurts
Top Middle Shelf – Raspberries, cucumber, grapes, salad and onion
Bottom Middle Shelf – Cheese and bacon
Bottom Shelf – Soya milk, almond milk, marmalade and a bottle of Corona
Door – Milk, OJ and condiments
Oops missed something – can you see the brown banana?
This is the second of two that had to go in the fridge. Yes I know. Bananas don’t go in the fridge. So why this one?
Well, here in the UK we’ve had a heatwave. It’s okay you did read that correctly, do not adjust your spectacles.
(us Brits like to talk about the weather, but it’s typically about the amount of rain we’re having!)
My bunch of bananas ripened uber-speedily. While removing banana number 3 from a trio the tops of the other 2 came away also.
To avoid food waste carnage (as I hadn’t time to intervene and bake a banana cake) they went in the fridge to try to preserve them a little longer.
It worked, 1 banana already has been whizzed into a smoothie. And that’s this bananas destiny also – I’m thinking a nice cool banana, raspberry and honey almond milk smoothie while sitting in the sun at lunchtime.
Did you know only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun?
(does anyone remember the 1980’s TV advert that used this song to promote their alcoholic drink? It’s really bugging me, It’s a strong childhood memory but I cannot find it on YouTube. Men and women were standing around a piano – think it was by an outdoor pool. May have been Pimms maybe? Help!)
I do have waste to confess. Approx. half a tub of Greek Yoghurt.
Last week we talked about the monetary cost of wasted food.
And while we are talking money, did you see Wednesday’s post?

Great save on the bananas. I think I’d be trying to get into the fridge with them with the heatwave.
I have to concede to wasting 1 1/4 heads of broccoli this week. Got sucked in by a multi-buy at the supermarket. I have a new mantra “It’s not a bargain if you bin it”. http://moretimethanmoney.co.nz/2015/07/02/its-not-a-bargain-if-you-bin-it/

This week I had a lot of waste. Not in the fridge but in my cupboards. I don’t store a huge amount of food, still, realized that I had some tins of sweetcorn, tuna and spices well out of date. Lesson: don’t store anything. Nearest shop is only a couple of mins walk. 🙂

After my disasterous foodwaste weeks while helping my parents move, I am back on my game this week with only a tiny little bit of cream cheese in the bottom of the tub that had gone out of date before I could use it up. It was only enough to spread on maybe half a crumpet? So not too bad really. Good on you saving those bananas in the heat. I can’t imagine England being that hot!!! But my bestie in Switzerland said it was predicted to be 36C in Zurich at the weekend. That seems crazy! In Switzerland! Enjoy it while it lasts 😉
