Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, 4-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. Every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Simply Being Mum’s Fridge Fridge
Top Shelf – The usual spreads and cheeses
Middle Shelves – Nectarines, Grapes, Cuke and Cheese
Bottom Shelf – Milk, Strawbs and Buttercream
Not a lot to report this week. The fruit and Cuke will be added to lunches over the weekend, with cheese and crackers.
There’s a smidge of buttercream left – so we’ll probably make some strawberry cupcakes with cream on Sunday.
I do have a dairy dilemma though. Top shelf there is a tub of cottage cheese and some hummus.
The cottage cheese is out of date – but unopened. The hummus is in date but opened – and has been open 6 days.
(I’m guessing my hummus is dairy?)
Oh what to do?
What would you do?
If you are taking part in #FoodWasteFriday – don’t forget the hashtag!
And please do drop your link in below – I’d like to pop over to yours!
Chuck the Hummus – but you can taste it. It goes “fizzy” when off.
Try the cottage cheese – will prob be fine 🙂
I’m intrigued! Definitely need to taste to see if fizzy!
The hummus did indeed get chucked! The cheese was as you say ‘fine’ thanks!

“Sell by dates” are mostly insignificant… both products are probably just fine. We ate hot dogs last Saturday that had a sell-by date of May 2009 and we’re still alive and didn’t get sick (they’d been in my freezer all that time, though). I recently used some cream cheese that was 6 months past its sell-date date and it was also fine. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/sell-by-dates-have-little-to-do-with-food-safety-2013-09-19
I always marvel at how sparse your fridge looks. Do you shop as you go, then? I mean, do you shop several times a week?
Thanks Nathalie. Yep agree ref sell-by-dates. I’m always a little more cautious with dairy though. But we have noses, eyes and tastebuds for a reason 😉
I’ll be posting about how I now shop very soon!

The cottage cheese should be fine. The great thing about cottage cheese is that you know when it’s bad. It starts to smell and turn funny colors. If you don’t see either one of these, you should be okay.
You were right. It was fine 😉

Hummus is not dairy, and has no dairy in it. Bet the hummus is fine. Cottage Cheese, I don’t like, so have no knowledge of, but most of the time if things look and smell right, I don’t pay much attention to the sell by dates.

Hummus is made of chickpeas, it’s a vegetablespread.

My bet is the cottage cheese will be fine for another week or so 🙂 Houmous goes fizzy, as someone’s already said – so I’d dip my finger in and try x

I think you have found your answer about the hummus from previous commenters. Indeed hummus is not dairy and in fact is usually vegan! You will know if it is off from the taste but also the smell should indicate if it is done. Cottage cheese lasts a while if I recall.
Here is my week of food waste, I have a few casualties 🙁

I tend to be quite careful about dairy and hummus as both grow bacteria, and I don’t like to take that risk! I, personally, would chuck both and put it down to experience 🙂
Unfortunately, there is a little waste over at mine (and a new appliance!)

Ahhhh I knew there was ‘something’ about hummus! Now I know – maybe that’s why I thought it was dairy based? Thanks

Mmm…hummus. Reminds me that I need to make some tomorrow since I have all the ingredients on hand 🙂 Dairy – I’d check it and see. Sometimes things spoil before their due dates and have been opened (which really does piss me off royally)

I opened it but didn’t use it, then realised it had been opened! I’d heard some hummus was in fact dairy – don’t know if that’s true?

If you taste either of them, you should be able to tell whether they’re off or not. My hummus, when off, tends to grow bright orange mould – dead giveaway!
