No Waste Tastes Great / What Do You See?

November 22, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – time for #nowastetastesgreat (oh yes we have a hashtag this week! haha!)

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge

IMG_3955

Do you ever look inside your Fridge and think ‘There’s nothing to eat in there’? Or do the Kids ever cry ‘Mom, there’s no food in the house!’.

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” – Wayne Dyer

My middle shelves contain a mix of foodstuffs. which individually do not make a meal.

****Cherry toms, 2 spoons of salsa, 2 spoons of sour cream, olives, a handful of salad Leaves, cuke and rapidly deteriorating green grapes****

But with some cheese from the top shelf, and some crackers and nuts out of the cupboard, I see at least one meal for a family of four.

And that’s where I’d like to leave it today. Please take a look in your Fridge, and see what you can do with what you have. If you don’t see anything the first time, look again. And please let me know what you see in the comments below.

p.s – I do have a food waste confession. One egg must have cracked on the way home – unfortunately I didn’t notice for a few days.

I wasn’t sure what to do with the egg, It has gone to waste 🙁

How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…and don’t forget to drop a link in the comments if you’ve blogged about it!

No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.

Your family seems to be unusually flexible in what it eats. I don’t see my family (when I was a kid, niblings, etc) eating the variety of what-can-I-make-from-this meals that yours does.

We call it “choosing tea”. The kids love it!

Jo, I am so inspired by your Friday fridges! Your posts about using what you have and especially today’s post about seeing things differently are keeping me encouraged to keep working to clean out my freezers and cupboards. Between you, thefrugalgirl, and thenonconsumeradvocate, I am on a rampage to use up the food I already have. For years, I have continued to grocery shop without taking stock of what we have and what it could be used for. Then I would come home from a grocery shopping trip with bags full of groceries, and after a couple of days, would already be complaining that I didn’t know what to make for dinner.
Now, I am (slowly) getting better at seeing what we have, and coming up with tasty meals that just need a little creativity. The freezers are closer to empty, and the cupboards are all inventoried. This makes meal planning feel like I have it under control! My husband thinks I’m a little nuts, but I love the look of a nearly empty refrigerator! Thanks for your blog!

I used to have trouble thinking past the standard “meat & 2 veg, or casserole” types of meals. This was what we had all during my childhood. I suppose it’s no wonder I felt those were the only real ways to make meals! But they can definitely lead to waste because there is always some kind of leftover meal or orphan ingredient in the fridge. I have gotten a lot better, happily, thanks in large part to your blog, Jo. Now our waste is usually due to either my husband or I not being home to eat up what’s in the fridge. And even that is improving!

Your blog is great, it’a amazing what concoctions you can come up with from left-over ingredients. I sometimes struggle to come up with ideas to use up ingredients but the internet never seems to fail me when I get a bit stuck. I also find trying to completely cut out food waste has made me much more creative in the kitchen.

Great post! So incredibly useful, I for one am always looking in the fridge and thinking I need to buy more food, but it’s so not the case, you really do just have to be creative sometimes!
