Food Waste Friday / The World’s Gone Baking Mad

September 20, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

There’s a fridge photo this week! Hurrah! No unplanned visits to A&E.

There’s also no waste to declare. Back on track people!

The photo was taken last night, hence the Hubby’s dinner ready for reheating is making a guest appearance in this Friday fridge.

I decided to leave nothing to chance this week. Learning from my mistake last week, of leaving my baking to the last minute and then having a bit-of-a-disaster, I’m ahead of myself today.

There’s baking to be done. Minnie Mouse cupcakes, for a fundraiser, to be precise.

I’m not the only one baking this week. In fact, it feels as though the world has gone baking mad.

Great British Bake Off is back on UK TV. The biscuit towers this week were a real treat. I’m a fan of edible constructions!

The best was, without a doubt, the Bavarian Watchtower (you can see it here) made from shortbread. As luck would have it Lisey posted her very own shortbread recipe the same day. Ashamedly I have never made shortbread. Which is maybe why my application, this year, didn’t get very far for the GBBO 😉

I’ll be trying it out soon. Thank you Lisey.

I’m also trying out a new scone recipe this weekend. Can you see the buttermilk on the top shelf? That’s where that is headed.

Oh and I plan on slow-cooking peach cobbler. After reading Kristen’s post about peaches I knew I had to try out a new autumn pudding. My sundried chicken recipe got picked up by The Food Explorer and seeing the link I headed on over. And guess what? There was a peach cobbler recipe. Sorted.

If you too have gone baking mad then watch this space. I’m anticipating a UK giveaway will appear here soon. If you haven’t subscribed then please feel free to do so, that way you won’t miss it, and don’t fear your e-mail address is safe with me. Alternatively if you get enough inbox-influx then I’m on Facebook and Twitter (look right – you can like or follow there also).

 ————————————————————————————————————————————
As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…

“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.** Jo

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

I’m impressed that you even applied to the GBBO. Good luck next time. We had a bad waste week here with some steaks getting left out all night. 🙁

Congrats on no waste 🙂 The applicants in the GBBO must be amazing, if they weren’t willing to take you. Your cakes always look so beautiful!

A combination of a full fridge and a busy week meant some carrots and a pineapple were forgotten and went to waste. I’m planning a full clean-out this weekend:

My baking skills pale into comparison to what is seen on GBBO. Not sure I was serious to be honest. Bit of a tester. Reckoned if I got an audition I’d have to spend more time in the kitchen practising. It was kind of a motivator… Good luck with the fridge cull…

Congratulations on getting back on track.

I found a few things that needed to go from my fridge this week.

A near miss with some mushroom stroganoff, but sadly the stringy runner beans and the lettuce didn’t fare so well here this week.

Jo, as always your post gave me a lift 🙂 I made chocolate chip cookies this morning to take to an afternoon barbecue/reunion of the group I traveled to England and Ireland with at the end of August. Really looking forward to seeing everyone again. Sadly, I can only watch GBBO when someone posts it to youtube, and in fact I watched the latest episode (traybakes & biscuits) this morning. Your cupcakes are absolutely adorable & are sure to be a quick seller.

Well done on the recipe being picked up by The Food Explorer, and on having no waste this week. It always sounds easy to have no waste, but I know from experience this is easier said than done. I had to compost some canned baked beans and two pears this week, and cut some dark spots off two tomatoes in order to use them, but generally speaking we did better than usual. It takes such constant vigilance!

Ooooh, you applied to the GBBO? That is big!! Would you try again next time? Your cakes and cupcakes are always beautifully done. What an experience it would be!

You do have to keep your eye on the prize. No-one is permanently immune to no-food-waste. We do our best? Well most of the time eh? 😉
I’m not good enough to go on GBBO (see my comment to Liz above). That’s not humility on my part it’s fact. Figured a challenge would step up my game. But then again maybe I should just self-motivate and get in the kitchen a little more. After all as the great Mary Poppins said ‘Practice makes perfect!’…
As for next year..maybe…we’ll see how the wind blows (oh another Mary Poppins theme!)
