One Trip To Ikea – Two Ideas

September 4, 2013 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s the first day back to school for the Kids today.

We struggled last academic year getting into a good and consistent routine before and after school. I vouched over the holidays that it wouldn’t be repeated this year.

So when I read (and saw) this post, by The Frugal Girl, I was inspired.

There’s nothing quite like getting it down on paper to make it happen.

Not quite perfect – but completed for the first day back. There are some tweaks required to the printed paper. My daughter tells me I also need to change the running order and she is quite right…oops!

Whilst in Ikea I also picked up some storage jars.

Add a few sweets…

Voila – great handmade(ish) birthday gifts for kids.

As I said…one trip to Ikea, two ideas…

**Ikea have no idea I’m blogging about them, as always I felt compelled to share**

Don’t forget it’s Zero Waste Week! I’ve abandoned the usual back2school cake in order to use up some mixture I had over from a cake I baked earlier. It’s red-velvet cupcakes for us this back2school day!

See y’all Friday for Food Waste Friday…

Great ideas here! I particularly like the morning and evening schedules – my son has Asperger’s (and probably my daughter too) and it is important to them to have a strict routine.

It took me a while to realise how important routine is to my kids. My daughter loves routine. She was very excited about it being formally outlined in this way. We’re going to work on her schedule and activities next in more detail so that I can pass over greater responsibility for organising bags, kit all that kind of thing!

Wow, your “back to school cake” mention reminds me that I must have been reading your blog for a year. Happy Anniversary to me! Love the ideas. And Ikea. There is not one near us so I can only dream.

Thank you for reading Joyce! I’ve also purchased jars from Sainsburys (when on special offer!)…

It’s such a simple, fun and effective idea! Day 2 and all going well. My 5-year-old pulled me up on the running order today – he remembered it was ‘make bed’ before brush teeth. And my 7-year old called up to me whilst I was in the shower – “you’ve got 5 minutes Mom!”
Think maybe it was me who needed it in writing rather than the kids…

Oops sorry – meant to say a HUGE thank you. Another post from The Frugal Girl that has had a positive impact on my family life that was easy to implement, looks aesthetically pleasing and didn’t break the bank!

[…] Routine – As boring as routine sounds, it works. I’m a recent convert to the benefits of routine and forming habits. One of my biggest regrets is not realising 10 years ago that children thrive on routine. It was when my second-child was born in 2008, and the reality of organising a family of four dawned on me, that I set about improving our routine. It has paid dividends. The Kids daily routines are framed for all to see. […]
