It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great.
Another chaotic week laced with illness once again! (Oh and my car went kaput and the UK had a huge downfall of snow, shutting schools). Hence the lack of activity, here, at the blog. I just about managed to get a recipe up this week. I’m anticipating things will get back to normal next week!

The green stuff gets me every time. There’s lettuce hanging around. I’ll salvage what I can and recycle the rest.
And of course it wouldn’t be Friday without grape waste. It’s time to take a break from the grape, I reckon.
There’s a pepper and some chipolatas in the fridge. With a few store cupboard ingredients and frozen veggies I can slow-cook a sausage casserole for dinner.
All in all, this Good Friday isn’t too bad on the food-waste front. Not perfect, but not too bad.
Wishing one and all a wonderful Easter. I’m cake decorating once more today. We’re into birthday party season.
This was last week’s gift to a school-friend. Looks simple, right? Yes that’s what I thought as I started it ๐
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…and don’t forget to drop a link in the comments if you’ve blogged about it!
No Waste Tastes Greatย is bought to you (as always) with thanks toย The Frugal Girlย for the original inspiration.

Hi Jo and Happy Easter! Same sort of fridge as you again with lettuce and grapes – a “break from the grape” is a good idea ๐ Have you tried lettuce soup? Have heard its good though it sounds weird. Will look into it! Also I tried Italian grape cake the other week which was lovely. Think it was on the BBC Good Food website. Ok if you have some that are just a bit mushy!
Have fun with your family this long weekend :-). Xxx

Now grape cake may be an answer… I’ll have to take a look. Thanks! Happy Easter Nell

Glad to see your fridge back the way it usually is. As usual, the cake is great. What flavor do you usually make them?
simplybeingmum says
It’s a vanilla sponge. Very easy and traditional tasting.

I’m curious, do you have grapes available all year round? We only have them in summer and early autumn (now) so I’m making the most of them ๐
I had a zero waste week this week – the first in a long while ๐
simplybeingmum says
Well done on no waste! I presume that all UK grapes are imported? Not sure. I really think it’s time to part company for a while with the grapes.

I had about a half a can of pasta sauce go to waste, and two slices of deli ham that hung around longer than I thought safe. Other than that, we’ve done okay.
I was having serious greens waste, because now I’m the only one eating them (only my husband and I are at home). So I decided to just use winter vegetables – turnip, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and winter squash – while it’s cold outside and I don’t mind the cooking heat. We eat them plain with protein on the side, or in stews or soups. They last a long, long time in the fridge if we don’t get to them for some reason, and they’re much cheaper when we’re trying to economize. We also use some frozen vegs like corn and peas for variety, but those, too, keep a long time in the freezer.
Sorry to hear you’ve had illness in your house again. There’s a lot of it going around here, too, people sick three and four times this season! And I’ve heard about your snow there – you’d think you were living in the Great Canadian North, eh?!
simplybeingmum says
I can dream about living in Canada, but alas I’m not! haha! Yep we still have snow hanging around, days after last snow shower. I much prefer winter veggies etc to salad. They seem so much more substantial! Lettuce has always reminded me of eating flowers/leaves. Which you can do with some species, but it’s just not my thing!

Sorry to hear the germs have been back at your house. There is so much going round over here, I’m glad the Easter break came when it did! Hopefully it will stop the small people being such efficient germ spreaders! I have wasted half a cup of soup and half a bag of frozen vegies that I tried, hoping they wouldn’t upset my (frustratingly) delicate stomach, but they did! Stupid cauliflower…However, in good food news, I made my first ever gluten free hot cross buns! And they were awesome! And so much cheaper than buying them from the shop ๐

Hope you have a great Easter and the Easter Bunny deposits much chocolate at your house ๐

Hey Clare – Happy Easter. Thanks for the recipe. I’d planned on making buns this year but got sick again about 10 days ago and really haven’t had any motivation. I’m just about keeping up with birthday cakes I’ve promised (because I promised!) but it’s been hard going.

Awesome cake! I find that cold stuff like lettuce and grapes are just not popular with my family when it’s so cold outside. I have to make special efforts to make sure they get eaten up like plating up the salad rather than making a big bowl for people to serve themselves, else noone chooses it!
simplybeingmum says
Hmmm I reckon salad is overrated! Give me a good ole root veggie any day ๐
