It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
All looking fine and dandy, apart from the photo – used my point and press today and it looks a little grainy?
All the usual spreads, yogurts, cheeses and eggs have plenty of life left in them yet.
The grapes will be eaten up over the weekend, and the peppers and passata will be popped in the slow-cooker with some curry paste and other veggies to conjure up some curry.
Dinner tonight will be parmesan crusted chicken.
I’ve located some tortilla wraps in the cupboard that need using up, and also some less than fresh bread that will process into breadcrumbs. There’s parmesan and mayo to hand, so just the free-range chicken to buy this morning. Fortunately I’m headed for Aldi once this post is up.
I’d like to say I haven’t a food-waste confession today, but alas that isn’t the case.
These grapes have bitten the dust and are on their way to the recycling bin. I really should know better, I’ve been burnt by grape waste before. Will I ever learn?
But all in all, not a bad week, this week. How about you?
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…and don’t forget to drop a link in the comments if you’ve blogged about it!
No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.

I wouldn’t have noticed the picture was grainy if you hadn’t said something. Then I had to look carefully. Am I mixed up. or is curry usually on Friday nights at your house?
simplybeingmum says
Nope you aren’t mixed up. It’s curry night if I haven’t potential waste to use up. The tortillas and bread didn’t look as though they’d keep fresh much longer so chicken wraps it was!

Grapes are one of the few things that get thrown out sometimes here. Not too many, but I tend to find that after a few days of eating them there are a few mouldy ones in the pack. Sometimes happens with strawberries as well – I find the fridge is slightly too cold for them and a few become frozen and mushy.
simplybeingmum says
Strawberries too cause me a problem. But I tend to freeze them at the first sign of wastage as I do like a protein shake with frozen fruit. I don’t feel grapes are so adaptable, you either eat as are or in this case they go to waste. I did try freezing them, but as I have sensitive teeth, it didn’t work out.

Aww poor grapes! 🙁 Are they totally beyond salvageable? Could you cook them down and use as a sauce? Your chicken looks delish!!
simplybeingmum says
The grapes are gone I’m afraid! I need to keep on top of my fresh batch! The chicken was lovely…. made a change from curry!

I find grapes to be the most unpredictable thing in terms of storage life. Sometimes they’ll be mouldy in a few days and other times they’ll last quite well. Maybe it has something to do with the conditions during shipping. I do find that if I wash and dry them well, within a day of purchase, and store in a loosely covered container with a paper towel in the bottom (and if there are a lot, another paper towel about halfway through), they last much better. And, bonus, they are ready to eat when you want them in a hurry.

Hmm – the paper towel idea may just work. I need to try something! they are indeed unpredictable 😉

Parmesan-crusted chicken sounds yum (and gluten free!). I bought some very ripe grapes on the weekend for 29c, so will have to eat them quickly to make sure they don’t end up in next week’s post!
simplybeingmum says
Hmmm, grapes do seem a difficult one!

We’ve had problems with grapes in the past so now I immediately freeze half for smoothies and because my daughter loves frozen foods. I never keep more grapes or strawberries in the fridge than we can eat in 2-3 days
simplybeingmum says
I’ve never considered grapes in smoothies…will have to try it out!

I love grapes – bought i.6kg or something recently! This time they lived in a colander over a bowl and they lasted a good week I think. My favourite snack, I’ve realised. What I always seem to waste is green onions/shallots. I never need as much as sold in the bundle.
simplybeingmum says
A week’s pretty good… it may be I need to look at how I’m storing them.
