It’s Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!
Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!
————————————————————————————————-
I would have liked to have titled this post
“Here’s To A No Waste 2013″…but already just 4 days in I have waste…
Simply Being Mum’s First Friday Fridge of 2013
Click here to find out more about my Friday routine
It’s not the worst I’ve seen. But there is waste. The fridge’s bottom shelf has some gravy left over from Christmas day that needs to go. And the yogurts are certainly past their prime.
You may notice my homemade Christmas Pud has taken up residence in the fridge once more. It didn’t get eaten. In fact a lot of storecupboard items didn’t get eaten. The flu hit Chez Wright, and rather than indulging this holiday, I lost 9lbs.
Hence this…
I’m anticipating once I get stuck in I may uncover some cupboard waste. The Kids are back at school next Monday and I’m finally feeling more human, so a cupboard declutter is top priority.
Before I hand you over to Kristen, I’d like to wish one and all a very Happy New Year.
Let’s see how low we can get that food waste this year!
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.
**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.**
Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”
<div align="center"><a href="https://simplybeingmum.com/" title="Simply Being Mum"><img src="https://simplybeingmum.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/food-waste-with-leaf-v2.12.jpg" alt="Simply Being Mum" style="border:none;" /></a></div>
If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you’re in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won’t work properly.

We’re still using up sprouts from Christmas. I only cooked a few on Christmas day, but had loads from my organic box and have been using them in everything – surprisingly nice finely sliced and fried with pesto to have with pasta, also have put them in both Thai and Indian curry (the Indian curry also had half of a rather sad looking leek and some old carrots!).
simplybeingmum says
Hey Rebecca – great save! I actually really like sprouts but have never thought of adding to a curry. I’ll have to remember that one!

Hi Jo! same here but I lost 7 pounds and just started eating normally yesterday (my birthday! ) Glad you feeling better :-). I really didn’t have a hold over waste at Xmas and lots of stuff went bad 🙁 furry soup and mushy fruit yuk. Back on track now though. Have a good day! Xxxxx
simplybeingmum says
Happy Birthday Nell. Hope you enjoyed it despite being under the weather. Oh boy hasn’t this Christmas been one full of sickness? It’s easy to make waste when you can’t eat. Just the thought of handling food turned my stomach. Here’s to us both getting back on track!!

Glad you are feeling better Jo. I have to say your Food Waste Friday post is one of my favorite things to read. 😉

Thanks Tina for your kind comment. I’ve had a bout of guilt of late with my lack of posting, but I really just could not muster up the energy to get typing. How ridiculous does that sound? So glad you’re reading!

I fear I did really poorly in December. It was mostly because one of my cats is really sick, and I’ve been so worried about him that I found it hard to eat – especially to eat things like fresh salad and veggies. Why is that do you suppose? I just couldn’t choke them down.
Anyhow, I’m sorry to report that a few cucumbers, some snap peas, half a pepper, some spinach & homemade salad dressing were all casualties of my emotional state. Sigh.
EcoCatLady says
Oh yes… and half a bag of clementines.
simplybeingmum says
I’m so sorry to hear about your cat…hope he/she is back on the road to recovery? It is very strange how closely linked our state of mind and also health is linked to appetite. I like you, struggle to eat when anxious – then it becomes catch 22, as you eat less it gets harder to eat without making yourself feel worse – well that’s how it works with me. I’ve had to gradually build my appetite back up. Here’s wishing all well for you Guys!

Not too bad here! But we have all been hungry and healthy. Sorry again that you were so poorly Jo, but glad you are on the mend.

Hey a healthy reader! Yay! Long may it last Sarah! 🙂

Only a couple of mushy strawberries here (the ones in the bottom of the punnet). A big improvement over last week, but that’s because I am eating again and cooking again. Yay! There does seem to be a bit of a theme going on here with ill-health induced starvation diets 🙂
I thought my 3.5kg weight loss was bad, but you’ve pipped me by a whole half a kilo! (3.5kg = 7lb 11oz). Hope you have fun putting it back on (I’m resorting to my emergency cheese and peanut butter diet, otherwise it will take me till this time next year to put it all back on again. I look like a Bratz doll at the moment…)
simplybeingmum says
This is the strangest new year ever. Everyone is talking about putting weight back on instead of dieting. Weight Watchers is going to be in some serious financial trouble if this bout of flu continues much longer! haha! Why is it when you haven’t really got it to lose it drops off, but when you need to shift a few pounds – no chance?
I so have an image of you as a Bratz Doll now! (I’m resorting to lasagne and chocolate – but am still struggling to eat the full amount – hey ho I’m sure it’ll all be back to normal soon)!!
Glad you’re feeling better 🙂

Hope everyone out there is on the mend. I am happy to report that so far, I have been healthy during the holiday season. However, sickness is swirling around me both at work and at home. On the waste front, a couple of bananas got too ripe. We’ve been doing pretty well with waste, but not with eating in general. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get back on track.

It’s the new year, so there’s the optimism that accompanies it! I’m sure you’ll soon be back on track!

Sorry you were so ill, Jo. That’s no way to spend the holidays! I agree, it’s so hard to keep on top of everyday chores like food use, when you’re not well. I just give myself a pass when that happens.
We’ve done pretty well with minimum waste around here. I toss all leftovers, even oatmeal, into the freezer right after a meal, then have a once every 2 weeks smorgasbord night. I do need to clean out the garage fridge, though, and there could be something lurking in there!
simplybeingmum says
Sounds super organised Lili – inspiring!
Lili@creativesavv says
Not so much organization, just part of our after dinner cleanup routine. Instead of putting leftovers into containers for the fridge, we put them into containers for the freezer. I think this makes our fridge a bit more bare, and I see produce and other highly perishable items more easily this way, and am reminded to use them quickly.

Hi Jo,
I’ve only just discovered this blog and love the “Food Waste Friday” idea. We weren’t home over the holidays, so no waste to report, but let’s see how the rest of 2013 will go…
I’ll definitely be back 🙂

Lovely to have you here Moira – let’s hope 2013 sees us all keeping on track with our food waste!

Somehow my good efforts flew out the window with the largess of the season 🙁
I ended up throwing out turkey, stuffing, gravy and vegetables galore. We just couldn’t eat it all, and I had company and didn’t get the leftovers into the freezer. I felt terrible throwing it out! It’s definitely something I need to think about before the next holiday.
