Food Waste Friday / I Bet You Weren’t Expecting That!

December 7, 2012 by SimplyBeingMum

It’ Friday Guys – My turn once more to host Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge

IMG_2511

I’m not going to give a run down of the fridge contents today. If you hadn’t noticed it’s packed to the rafters 😉

Yesterday was spent prepping for a dinner party I’m hosting this evening. My fridge is so small that it doesn’t take  much for it to look overloaded.

One notable item worth mentioning is the chocolate orange cheesecake that was baked yesterday and is chilling.

IMG_2507

I’ll post the recipe, here, over the weekend.

This evening’s menu consist of Broccoli and Stilton Soup, Chicken with prunes wrapped in bacon served with cranberry gravy and root vegetables. Finally, cheesecake to end.

I also spent yesterday baking Christmas cakes…

IMG_2509

It’s starting to smell a lot like Christmas at Chez Wright!

Unfortunately, as it’s Food Waste Friday, it’s time for my confession. There’s no photo this week as I have already disposed of the items to make space in the fridge.

My food waste confession – a small portion of parsnip and apple soup and half a baked potato.

Not too bad, but of course I could do better!

As always I’ll leave the last word to Kristen…
“How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, link us up by entering your info into the widget below. You’ll save money, reduce your trash output, and get a little publicity for your blog! And if you don’t blog, you can still share about your food waste by leaving a comment.

**I’ve decided not to include the LINKY for the foreseeable. My blog doesn’t allow links on the actual post, and being redirected to another page isn’t ideal. Please drop your link in the comments section.**

Those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.”

NOW your fridge looks like mine used to look ALL THE TIME! You are an inspiration in so many ways – in keeping my fridge tidy and useful, in the ways you create and present your meals and treats, and in how you make time to blog about it. If I was having a dinner party tonight, I would be in mad-rushing-around mode about now, not taking beautiful photos and writing a post 🙂 Have a wonderful evening!

Jo.H – I’ve learnt by my mistakes many times over. I do the majority of the prep the day before! Life has a habit of throwing up the unexpected!

I almost dropped over when I saw the picture of your fridge. A little different that we usually see.
Good luck with the dinner party. The menu sounds delicious.

I did well with both cooking at home this week and waste. Here’s hoping for the same next week.

Ugh. I wasted part of a seedless cucumber. They go bad so quick. I hate wasting produce. I also had to throw out some homemade guacamole my friend made. There was just too much for myself (husband, son and granddaughter will not touch). 🙁 Will do better next week as I have my menu and grocery list on par.

After several weeks of letting the fridge go with out paying much attention to it, I discovered smelly leftovers, moldy yogurt, sour milk and a brown onion. I am so disappointed with myself

We have been pretty good about wasting nothing or very little, but I’m feeling a little frustrated about the grocery budget. I did make some yummy yogurt in the slow cooker though…that cheered me up 🙂

Two apples mysteriously got large bad spots. One of them looks as if it were dropped. Guess it’s time to make a little more applesauce. (My mother likes applesauce but not cinnamon so I endeavor to keep her supplied.)

I donated a large batch of applesauce yesterday for a fundraiser which was sans cinnamon. In fact it was sans anything apart from apple – worked out great!

I’d like to echo the ‘whoa full fridge’ sentiment LOL We’re so not used to seeing your fridge like that 🙂 Your cake looks divine – how’d it turn out?

No waste here as we’re still sick and/or stuck in vacation mode ie not used to grocery shopping to the max each visit.
