It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. Okay, so it’s starting to look a little like Christmas.
Shall I explain?
The top shelf is the usual spreads, garlic and yogurt – all with life left in them yet.
But cast your eyes below. Not instantly recognisable but there are 2 homemade Christmas puddings and some salt dough.
Following my new recipe (eliminating animal fat and substituting breadcrumbs) I made 3 puddings.
Correction, I actually ended up making 4 puddings. Not sure what it is with me and Christmas pudding, I also make way too much mixture.
Fortunately a neighbour had a spare pudding basin. They are now the proud owner of a Christmas pud (a bready one ;-)).
I won’t be sharing the recipe here this year because it’s not quite right. I know this, because we’ve already eaten the small one. Very tasty with ice-cream (well, I’m trying to make it not too Christmassy yet!). It’s too bready (is that even a word?). It needs work!
The salt dough I’m not planning on eating. I made these:
And I still have more to make. I’m having a stall at the village fayre this Sunday. My first ever. I’m a little bit scared…
You may have noticed – No waste at Chez Wright – Hurrah. The first in a long time. There’s also nothing for dinner, but that’s okay because I am out to eat then catching the new Twilight movie. The Hubby is away and the Kids have a sleepover.
Fortunately there’s a portion of Broccoli and Stilton soup sitting on the bottom shelf for my lunch. No cooking for me today – hooray!
Hang around though Guys, I have a UK giveaway…
If you’re starting to think about Christmas yourself, this giveaway may be of interest.
I’ve been contacted by a very kind jeweller who has offered one of my readers a bespoke pair of cufflinks.
If you follow this blog on a regular basis you will know that I am not a big shopper and try to handmake as much as I can when gifting, But a close second is a personalised gift. Particularly when purchased from an independent company.
Please let me introduce them in their own words;

Good luck with your stall! If I was nearby, I’d pop in for sure. Although still completely on the fence about decorating this year. We shall see if the mood strikes closer to the time.
Well done on the empty fridge. I might have waste this week. It’s been a very odd week schedule wise and DH had a nasty cold for most of it, so haven’t used as much of our food. Most things will be fine or freezeable, but not sure I’ll get through enough of the salad bits before they turn.
simplybeingmum says
Thanks Lauren – I didn’t reply earlier as I’d underestimated just how much work was involved making my stock! I tend to get carried away…
Hope there wasn’t too much waste?

It has been a long time since I’ve worked with salt dough. What do you paint/decorate them with?
simplybeingmum says
Acrylic paint works great. I use a variety of methods, brush sponge etc… then finish in different ways also. A bit of anything goes really!

Good luck for your stall! Sounds wonderful! We have been reading lots of Rainbow Magic books lately and many of them seem to feature village activities like village fayres. We don’t really have those over here, they sound like so much fun!
I had lettuce wastage issues this week – but it wasn’t my fault! The lettuces at the shop were over-watered and it went slimy the day after I bought it! I did, however, use up all my spinach 🙂
And enjoy your night out and your night off! Lucky 🙂
simplybeingmum says
Oh my Rainbow Magic… Kirsty, Rachel, the goblins and of course…Jack Frost! You’re right they do have an awful lot of village fayres!
Lettuce always gets wasted here, I’ve given up on it!

Four bananas bit the dust here – we scrounged from the freezer and pantry all week so you would think the bananas would have gotten eaten, but they turned so fast. Today I bought quite a lot of produce, as I’m trying to get back to healthier eating, so I will need to be extra careful this week to use things in the right order. Congratulations on your no-waste week, and I can’t wait to hear how your sale goes!
simplybeingmum says
Thanks Jo – sorry about the bananas…. 🙁
Craft Fayre went okay, not many sales (think everyone was out enjoying the crisp sunny weather), but lots of useful feedback and ideas on taking it forward. All very exciting…but rather exhausting also!
Jo H. says
I hear you on the exhaustion – it took me all week to really get back to myself! (But you’re young and shipshape :))
