Food Waste Friday / Fancy Some Spicy Soup?

October 12, 2012 by SimplyBeingMum

It’s Friday Guys – time for The Frugal Girl’s Food Waste Friday!

FoodWasteFriday

Each week since March 2008, in order to motivate her to waste less food, Kristen The Frugal Girl, has posted a picture of any food that has gone bad over the last seven days. She found this embarrassing practice so helpful, to her, that she invited other bloggers to post their own photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I started participating in October 2010 and have found, that 2-years on, the amount of food I waste is minimal. In fact every Friday, as part of my No Waste Tastes Great routine, I account (and devise a plan) for all my potential food waste as well as confessing to any items that I failed to save.
Kristen has kindly asked me to host Food Waste Friday, alternate weeks (when she doesn’t post herself), and her initial invite for everyone to join in is cordially extended here!

This will be the 3rd week I’ve completed my Friday routine on a Thursday afternoon.

This week I get a Friday off being ‘Mum’ (hence getting the fridge sorted a day early)…instead I’m going to be a Twihard 😉

I won’t be around until Sunday and all will be explained over at Facebook then. I really need to start acting my age!

Anyhow…let’s get down to business.

The fridge was pretty sparse pre-Aldi-shop. Just a bag of carrots and an onion hanging around.

Which was quite fortunate really.

Because this…

…didn’t quite work out as planned. It still got eaten, of course!

And I’d hoped to post a soup recipe yesterday. Which I did. But not the one I had envisaged.

The carrots saved the day. I opted for a firm favourite.

Spicy Carrot, Ginger and Lentil Slow Cooked Soup

A true Autumn/Fall warmer!

However, it wouldn’t be Food Waste Friday without a confession. I’m not having the best run on the food waste front of late.

This happened…

…whilst waiting for me to pull my finger out and bake my

Happy Heart Carrot Cake.

Over to Kristen for the last word, as always…

Both the soups look delicious. I’ve got some parsnips in the cupboard, so you’ve given me an idea! Bad luck with the pineapple. Look forward to finding out what form your Twihardiness took! Intriguing!!

You did a lot better than me this week, well done 🙂 I cooked an overload of food on Sunday night thinking I could use it for lunches, but didn’t get through it all before it went bad 🙁

The carrot soup sounds yum and pretty frugal too.

I love soup in fall & winter too. I plan to try both your recipies soon. I did pretty well on the food waste this week, only letting one pear get too ripe to use. I also wrote a follow up story to the “milgurt” episode from last week.
