It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great
Click here to find out more about my Friday routine
The saying goes ‘A change is as good as a rest’. Well this week there’s a slight change. Because…hopefully…I’m getting a rest somewhere in sunny Somerset.
No fridge photo this week. Instead a waste confession.
This happened Tuesday.
Oh yes – I dropped 250g/9oz of Cheddar Cheese (Ironically as Cheddar is where I am as you read this) into the washing-up bowl.
How did that happen?
Well this is what should have gone in the bowl. I’d made pizza for lunch.
(not the pizza…that would have been a double faux pas)
As conscientious as I am about waste, wet soapy cheese is a turn-off.
So there you have it. It could happen to anyone…couldn’t it?
I’ll be back at the blog on Monday to catch up (and post) should any of you kind people leave a comment .
(p.s in case you missed it… I did eventually get around to posting my Sticky-Bottomed Raspberry Cupcake Recipe over at Jo-Jo Bakes)
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…
No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.
Don’t forget I update most days on Facebook.
Why not head on over and join the conversation?

Think I would have rinsed the cheese under clean water, dried it off and used it! Would really upset me to throw away a whole block like that.
simplybeingmum says
It wasn’t good throwing it away. I just couldn’t wash it off. I’ve got a real aversion to wet cheese and bread. Also the dishwater was pretty grim. But still you may be right, I probably should have dried it.

you made me smile on a Friday :o)
I’m sorry about the cheese. But at least it’s something to laugh about.

Hey Joanna – glad it made you smile! 🙂 It wasn’t a good move on my part…I really need to pay more attention!

Ouch! Losing a whole brick of cheese! Now that hurts!
Have a great time away!

It did hurt! And we had a great trip – Thanks Lili!

Oh, what a shame! You’re right, it could happen to anyone – and does! Not necessarily cheese in the dishwater, but any kind of “dropping” accident 🙂
simplybeingmum says
Hi Jo – I’m pretty clumsy generally. As soon as I released the item in my hand I just knew what I’d done!

I took a large sip of melted butter once because it was in a cup just like my coffee. 🙂
simplybeingmum says
Oh My – Sharon you should meet my Hubby. He ate a block of butter I’d put on a side plate with bread (for him to spread) thinking it was cheese. He was queasy pretty much the rest of the day. Solo butter doesn’t go down well, I feel for you!

Oh dear, that lovely cheddar! But I’ve got the best cheese disaster story ever…
When I was a kid we used to get these enormous blocks of “American cheese” (which isn’t really cheese… technically it’s “cheesefood” but that’s another story.) Anyhow, my brother had been to a birthday party or something and came home with a pair of plastic toy hand cuffs. So Mom’s in the kitchen slicing a bit off of a brand new ginormous 10 pound hunk of cheesefood. She walks across the kitchen to put the knife in the sink where upon my brother ambushes her and hand cuffs her to the sink.
At that moment, Tippy (the family dog) saw her opportunity and leaped into action! She jumped up and grabbed the cheesefood and high tailed it out the open back door. My poor mother was yelling and cursing, but was helpless to do anything about it. Tippy had herself quite a feast, and a nasty bout of bright orange diarrhea in the following days! I’ve never been able to stomach “cheesefood” since (which is probably a good thing.) 🙂
simplybeingmum says
Cat – anything that would give a Dog orange diarrhea kinda freaks me out! What is ‘cheesefood’, is it cheese? And why do they have to add ‘food’ to the word…
Great story! Sounds like both you brother and dog can see an opportunity when one arises! 🙂

Oh dear! This did make me laugh! And can happen to anyone 🙂 I didn’t tell you my story about how I had to run out to the cake shop at 4.30pm the afternoon before Alex’s party to buy a new pack of yellow fondant as the one I had just been kneading on my bench had rolled off and landed splat in the corner of my kitchen floor. Unfortunately, for various reasons, I hadn’t washed my kitchen floor for two weeks and I wasn’t feeding that icing to anyone! Cost $13 for a replacement pack…Hope you’ve had a fantastic time in hopefully sunny somerset, but you’re missing what is possibly the best opening ceremony EVER! (hope you’re videoing it…)
simplybeingmum says
$13 sounds an awful lot Clare… I’m going to try making fondant, and if it works will share. Glad you got the cake sorted.
Trust me to be away with no electricity the only time I will see London host the opening ceremony. I’ve heard it was amazing, and that Mr Bean was a big hit – as was Bond and HRH. I’m going to watch it on YouTube later today. Interestingly we in the UK like to self criticise. The majority of feedback has been excellent, but as always in this country there’s been some negative press saying it was too political (labour/left-wing orientated) – but I would imagine that’s via the right-wing newspapers?
doingitsimply says
That’s NZ prices for you! I have had to rent a Mr Bean DVD from the library as my kids spent all weekend re-enacting his scene from the opening ceremony. I haven’t heard them laugh so hard in ages! And I don’t think it’s just Britain that is self-critical. Maybe it’s just because we’re a colony and think in a similar way, but I think most news agencies still think that negativity sells news. Shame that! It really was quite spectacular!
simplybeingmum says
Still waiting to watch it…have been busy baking! It’s on BBC iplayer, so fingers crossed today. Mr Bean is very funny – there’s a generic saying over here “He/She/I/You drive/s like Mr Bean”

Yup, it could definitely happen to anyone!
Now if it were me, I think I would’ve thoroughly rinsed the cheese off (assuming you caught it right when it went in), tossed it in the slow cooker, and tracked down some cauliflower to go with it.
Can’t be worse than the celery gratin, right? 😉
simplybeingmum says
I couldn’t do it Robert. I really do have a thing about wet cheese (and bread). The water was horrible also. I wouldn’t have been able to serve it, I just know I wouldn’t. But you’re right, probably wouldn’t have been worse than the gratin.

I would be in the cheese washing camp, from afar, but I’m sure if it happened, I might change my mind depending on the washing up water!!

Thanks Sarah – I confirm the water was grim! Also (I’ve mentioned this above) I have a real aversion to wet cheese. Really can’t do it. Makes me feel queasy!
