It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
Looking pretty sparse eh?
Top Shelf – Spread (for cake baking), garlic, cheddar, stilton and wensleydale cheese. All in date.
Top Middle Shelf – Nowt!
Bottom Middle Shelf – Half a jar of shop-bought pasta sauce (from my emergency stash)
Bottom Shelf – Some ‘past their prime’ green grapes
Door – Milk and 2 eggs, plus a third of a bottle of white wine (well I am back doing the school run each day)
I really thought I might have some waste today. Looking at the grapes yesterday it didn’t look promising. However, upon giving them a gentle squeeze this morning, I reckon that they are edible. In fact so determined am I that they won’t go to waste, that I’ll eat them all myself over the weekend to save composting.
So what’s the plan today? Well normally if I have foodstuffs to use up I conjure up a No Waste Tastes Great dish. Lunch will be pasta for Dan and I (he’s home from school at midday) and that’ll take care of the remaining pasta sauce. For dinner the Kids will have boiled egg and soldiers, with cheese and crackers to make it a more substantial meal. Anything goes at Chez Wright on a Friday!
It’s been a while since the Hubby and I partook in a takeaway on a Friday evening but this may be the ideal opportunity. I think a portion of fish and chips from the Village Chipshop would go down quite nicely this evening with the chilled white wine. Classy girl aren’t I?
I am doing my grocery shop this morning at Aldi, and could grab something to slow-cook for later, but I fancy a night off tonight.
The meal plan for next week is already up on the board.
So without further ado it’s off with my grocery list and reusable bags in hand to try to meet my self-imposed £50 grocery budget.
How’s your Fridge looking this Friday? Anything to declare? Or is it nice and bare? Please share…
No Waste Tastes Great is bought to you (as always) with thanks to The Frugal Girl for the original inspiration.
Don’t forget I’m on Facebook, why not pop across and join the conversation?

Looking good! My fridge has half a portion of leftover soup which my flatmate saved, but didn’t eat. Hmmm, it’s half progress I guess. But I think that will go to waste as it’s been in there all week, and it was leftover to begin with. Then some salad bits which I’ll serve with dinner tonight. Leftover mash, but that was made on purpose to make shepherd’s pie tomorrow. Otherwise, all good over here too.
The chippie sounds extremely tempting, especially with the rain we’re getting battered with (no pun intended) as I type this. My mum used to buy chips when it was raining (growing up in Aus, this wasn’t too frequent!) so now I crave them whenever the weather is really terrible. But I will stick with my plan. 🙂

I’m trying to workout whether flatmates habits are improving? Maybe he should go on a ‘frozen food’ diet? Absolutely all his food be frozen in specific portion sizes and then thaw out as required to try and reduce waste? Maybe that’s a little extreme?
That shepherd’s pie sounds great, if ever you fancy sharing your recipe, I’d love to do a series of ‘Readers recipes’.
The rain – yeah… it’s getting a little tedious… Apparently we are on the brink of a drought – bizarre! More like complacency on the part of the water companies – we have so much all the time that we get caught short when the downpours are slightly reduced! Anyhow off the soapbox…
(I’d slot in a portion of chips next week as I expect this is here to stay!)

I wrote out the recipe for you and tried to email to the addy I had, but it bounced. I think you can get my email address from the comment notifications, so drop me a reply and I’ll resend it.
The most annoying habit is that he buys things just because they’re cheap, not because we need them. As an example, he came home with a few packs of frying steaks because they were marked down to a quid. Sure they’re freezable, but not an item I’d normally buy. So now I have a lot of steak in the freezer to figure out what to do with. Although I just thought, I can mince them! Can’t believe I didn’t think of that earlier. Now I can easily work them into the plan. Hooray! 😉

Sorry Lauren, this comment got missed by me somehow! I’ll drop you a mail with another address – thanks for the recipe – really appreciated!

This is the kick in the rear I needed in order to get back to a better cooking / menu routine. I’ve been a bit lax what with the nice weather & not wanting to be inside much….especially over a hot stove. But when I kept a pre-planned menu for the following week then I always seem to do just fine with it – time to get back on track with that!
Thanks for the unintended reminder!
simplybeingmum says
Jane, I know! If I just go with it, it doesn’t work out, we eat all sorts of things that really I’d rather not (and waste increases). As boring as meal planning sounds/can be (I quite like doing it, but I am a little odd). Glad to hear youre getting back on track.
Ps very envious of your weather – it’s rubbish in the UK!

My week was not too good – I had a pound of hamburger go bad before I could find the time to cook it and a bag of parsnips which rotted in the bag while I thought they were still firm. Too bad the bags weren’t clear as then a person could see the condition better. But I must say, if I had checked earlier, they might have been saved.
My challenge this week is going to be finding the time to cook the pork tenderloin I bought at a wonderful price, and the grapes that have turned out to be sour. I love sweet grapes but can’t manage the sour ones.
Your fridge looks lovely as always 🙂 Enjoy your night off!
simplybeingmum says
Jo – you need to get that slow cooker – I have a great pork recipe. 🙂
Tip – remove stuff from packaging (if you can) so you can see it in your fridge. If I buy bagged carrots, the wrapper is see-through, but still I tend to take out and pop loose in a container. I find some produce gets damp if bagged up, particularly when bagged up together. That’s one reason I don’t use my veg/salad drawer at the bottom – because ‘out of sight out of mind!’. So glad you’re sharing!!!!
Jo H. says
Good idea about the produce – I knew if I took it out of the bag and left it loose, it would get dried out – never thought about putting it in a container (duh). Thanks for the recipe as well!

Jo, you might find the grapes a little more palatable if you freeze them first. I love frozen grapes for a snack!

Okay I’m sold – would never have thought of that! Fab idea!

Susan, thank for the idea – I’ll have to give this a try.

I meant to type thank with an “s”, of course 🙂

What are chicken pasties?
Rachel P. says
Wondering that myself. Do tell.
simplybeingmum says
Hi Guys… pasties are similar to pies. I believe they originated in Cornwall (South West English Coast) and originally were beef based, but when we went to Wales last week the Hubby had Welsh Oggie (which is the same thing but his had lamb inside). You can get pasties with all sorts in now, so I am going to adapt a typical recipe and use chicken and maybe mushroom.
