It’s Friday Guys and time for No Waste Tastes Great!
I don’t know how much of my philosophy on life I have shared with you all, but I subscribe to the ‘boomerang’ theory and my main mantra is ‘You get back what you give in life’. Be that work, relationships, home life, pretty much everything.
Another belief I hold is that ‘pride comes before a fall’. I’ve been pretty proud of my no waste habits of late haven’t I? Perhaps a tad too much?
Boy have I come down to earth with a bump?
Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge
I opened the Fridge this morning to find the thermostat on the coldest it could be, two frozen peppers, slightly frozen broccoli stalks and an exploded jar of home-made picked beetroot.
It doesn’t smell fantastic either!
My prediction is that my beautiful Son has been mooching in the fridge looking at the chocolate yogurt and turned the dial accidentally on the thermostat (which you can’t see but it’s on the top at the right).
So what does this mean regarding waste? Well 2″ of leftover cucumber has just been tossed into the food recycling and the 2 frozen peppers have gone straight in the freezer (I’d normally chop but going to give it a go freezing whole as they are already pretty much there!). The broccoli isn’t frozen all the way through so I’ll boil and cook for the kids tonight. The grapes are also okay – not sure why – they were contained in plastic so perhaps that’s helped?
The top two shelves are entirely unscathed, the spread, cheese, garlic (in blue pot) and eggs in door are fine. So the kids will be having cheese omelette and broccoli for dinner. The Hubby will be having a takeaway I suspect and I’ll partake in the Butternut Squash Soup (next to the exploded jar) that I had left to thaw in the bottom of the fridge, but is of course still frozen 🙂
My main regret is the beetroot. It is unsalvageable – I have a feeling there’s karma at play here as I’d been slightly disingenuous last week on my Food Waste Friday comment over at The Frugal Girl about the beetroot. I have been receiving a jar a week from my Mom, and instead of being grateful I’d had a little moan about trying to get through it so as not to waste it. Lesson learnt me thinks!
I’d already mentioned there was something a little spooky about that jar of beetroot on Facebook – it even looks a little sinister sitting in the fridge oozing bright red juice!
How’s your Halloween Weekend Fridge looking this Friday – Any horror stories you’d like to share!

Shame about the beetroot Jo, could it not be used for a chocolate&beetroot cake?

Hi Laura – I photographed this and also posted before I actually touched it to clean the fridge. I thought the glass had smashed at the bottom but it hasn’t! The chocolate and beetroot cake sounds amazing and I’d love the recipe – could you e-mail it to me please? The only issue – well two really is 1. it’s pickled in vinegar – would that work? and 2. I now have doubts in my mind as to whether the glass has splintered in some way – I know that probably sounds daft but one thing I really panic about is firstly poisoning my family and particularly them ingesting foreign objects through food such as glass (something in my subconscious no doubt!)

I use the Nigella recipe from here: http://www.nigella.com/recipes/view/chocolate-beetroot-cake-2733 Beetroot in vinegar works too, except rinse the beetroot well. (Although I probably would not dare to use that particular poor jar of beetroot in above image:))

Thanks for that! I’ll be having a go, also found a crock pot recipe with beetroot… think I might ask my Mom to stop pickling them! 🙂

The other week we had a repairman come look at our ice maker. He turned off our fridge and did not TELL us. I’m sure your son is cuter and easier to forgive than our repairman. I feel your pain!!

Whoa schoolboy error – what are they teaching them at fridge repairman classes these days? 🙂
Serves me right for moaning about donated beetroot! I’ll remember that next time I’m sooo ungrateful!
Hope you salvaged some of your food stuffs?

Speaking of grapes–we freeze the on purpose all of the time. A great treat to pop into your mouth.

Oh my, your poor fridge!
In Canada we call those “pickled beets” and I do love them – but somehow always manage to get them on the tablecloth or my shirt or both. Uncoordinated, I guess 🙂

Beetroot Juice is a pain to get out… I speak from experience – also uncoordinated! 🙂
