It’s Friday Guys and it’s time for No Waste Tastes Great
Following on from my Cooking From Scratch Cost Experiment last week, I decided to forego my usual online grocery delivery Saturday morning, and take a couple of days to consider how I am shopping, budgeting etc…
The plan was to post Mid-Week with some findings and actions going forward.
Then Monday there was a problem. My Mom was taken into hospital, where she still is.
All plans out of the window, and survival kicks in.
What this difficult week has resulted in food wise is:
1. No Waste at all. I hadn’t got anything in the fridge last weekend, so definitely haven’t got anything in it this week!
2. Living off storecupboard supplies or what I like to call my ‘ICE’ ingredients. the stuff that is always on hand, to rustle up ‘In Case Of Emergency’ Meals.
So what has the Wright Clan been living off this week?
- Soup
- Bread
- Fishcakes
- Bean Chilli
- Cottage Pie
- Pasta
- Pizza

Hope your mum will get better soon!
The weekly menu was great! 🙂
An idea for an “in case of emergency meal”:
Fry a middle size chopped onion on a little oil. Take it off the heat and add some paprika. (to make the onions nice and red) Then put it back on the heat, add minced beef (or pork). (about 450g) At the same time, make cook some rice (enough for four) and boil a large broccoli (or cauliflower or whatever veg you have at home). When mince, rice and broccoli are all ready, put them all into a pyrex dish, smear a small of sour cream (or creme french or natural yoghurt) over it and put it in the oven at 170C for about 30 minutes. (it works best if you mix the rice and mince, and put the broccoli over them)

That sounds great, I may try it regardless of any emergency! If you have any more I’d love to hear them…
ps – have you named the dish?

Jo, I hope your mother is doing okay. I know what it’s like; it’s very hard on the head as well as physically tiring. Take care of yourself too.
Very good points in this post – it is entirely possible to eat from packages, cans, and freezer when you have to – and still be getting good nutrition.

Thanks Jo – It is hard, but does make you prioritise…
We certainly have eaten from packages, cans etc this week… tinned fish is fantastic for making a myriad of dishes, and thank heaven for whoever invented dried pasta!
