Hi Guys, it’s Friday and it’s time for No Waste Tastes Great.
I’m not proud of this fact, but I do have waste this week and it is non-salvageable.
Okay – ready for a grim photo of non-edible bolognaise?
The explanation: Wednesday was my ‘New Recipe Experiment Day’ – I had a Slow Cooked Thai Green Pork Curry planned for the Hubby and I.
Unsure of whether;
a) my recipe would be any good and…
b) whether the kids would eat it anyway
I decided to thaw out some slow cooked bolognaise to reheat for their dinner. Then… and this is why I only meal plan for 6 days…we had an unexpected drama. A minor accident resulted in my poor 6-year-old Daughter having an emergency trip to the dentist, no dinner (so no bolognaise), and lots of soup and milkshake now being drunk through a straw.
The bolognaise is headed for the bin, but fortunately the ingredients I purchased for my new recipe are still all okay to use. So this morning I have loaded Lil’ Bill my Standard Slow Cooker up with:
- 400g of cubed lean pork
- 3 Tablespoons of Thai Green Curry Paste
- A few grinds of black pepper
- 4 Crushed Garlic Cloves
- 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary
- 400ml of chopped tomatoes
- 300ml of hot vegetable stock
- The juice of 1 lime

So sorry to hear of your daughter’s dental mishap. Will she be on liquids much longer? I love your idea of planning for only six days. You’re right, something usually happens about once a week that means waste by the end of the week.

Thanks Jo… she attempted soft bread with grated cheese for dinner this evening as she can bypass the top two front milk teeth that have died, but are still intact if a little wobbly. I’m hoping that she will try to eat a few more things over the weekend – I can hear her tummy growling! 6 days is the most I would ever plan for – very rare does a week pass without there being something! 🙂

Ouch! I hope she’s not in too much pain Jo.

She’s okay – a little shook up! The tooth fairy is on standby for a premature double drop over the next week or so…

Given the circumstances, one pan of food waste isn’t bad at all Jo!
I have a leftover container in the fridge of beans and rice we had last week. I’m afraid to open it, but I know it’s going in the trash. 🙁
simplybeingmum says
Be afraid – be very afraid! I wouldn’t open it – straight to bin I reckon…
Rachel says
I agree. Beans and rice will be a bomb even a touch fermented. Chuck it!

Jo, when my son used to wear braces, his whole mouth would be so sore after each adjustment, and there were a few really filling things he used to be able to slurp down without chewing. One was oatmeal porridge – and what the heck, use lots of brown sugar to make it go down easier 🙂 and milk to add protein. Another was split pea soup, nice and thick – although, you are the master of soups, so you probably don’t need another suggestion along that line. Yogurt and pudding also slide down well and tend to keep the tummy satisfied for awhile. You’ve likely thought of all these, but on the off chance that you haven’t HAD much time to think, well, here they are 🙂

Thanks Jo they are superb suggestions – the porridge is definitely something we will give a go… if I add some chocolate powder it may tempt her! I empathise with your Son! I too had the full on braces which in the 80’s wasn’t very common in the UK (2 of us in the whole secondary school). I remember well going for the tightening of the wire across the blocks and the agony that followed! Well worth it though!

So sorry to hear about the dental visit. Eeek, poor girl.
You’ve just inspired dinner here. Pork expires today, curry paste open, veg in the fridge.
I am loving Tesco delivery and having an almost empty fridge at the end of the week. Thank you for the inspiration and how to. Chris even commented that it was so neat to have dinner Sunday night and see that our fridge was almost empty.
About to shoot you an email.

You can’t go wrong with a Pork Curry – especially if slow cooked IMO!
Glad to hear the Tesco deliveries are working out for you… I agree with Chris I get such a sense of satisfaction from an empty fridge as my next load of groceries are about to appear. Nothing worse that trying to cram some more in, when it’s half full and you start wondering how much will be going to waste. Thanks for the mail have e-mailed back this morning 🙂
