It’s Friday Guys – and it’s a really busy Friday for SimplyBeingMum
As you know if you follow the blog – Friday is my No Waste Tastes Great challenge.
My mind was on other things on rising this morning. First on the agenda was to make two (yes two – not one) Birthday cakes for a joint celebration tomorrow evening. In true style I decided to go for it and have actually made 3 chocolate fudge cakes of varying sizes and 12 cup cakes. All to be decorated later (if I get time argghh!).
A quick trip to the dentist later, with my nearly three-year old son who didn’t like Mommy sitting in the big scary chair… then time to check out the Fridge.
Not so bad this week on the waste front. I have a turkey breast and it’s a ‘ready to roast’ one – bit of a cheat this week – heehee! I also had 5 potatoes, 2 carrots and a leek.
No problemo.
All the veggies straight in Brenda my veggie slow cooker, with some vegetable stock. On high (as so late in the day loading her up) and going to leave for 4 hours. At which point the pots will go in with the breast for up to an hour to roast in a drzzile of olive oil. The remaining veggies will be made up in a nice gravy, and dinner is served.
Well for the rest of the clan anyway, as tonight I am out with TeddyMums – this is a circle of girlfriends whom I met when my first-born first went to Nursery and we have kept in touch. One TeddyMum just turned 40 so it’s a celebration but fortunately no Birthday Cake to bake – she spent her Birthday in New York – Lucky Gal! So it’s pan asian cuisine for I tonight – Yum!
What I will be doing is blending any veggies not required for the dinner to make into a lovely veggie soup to take the edge of my appetite tonight. As before the meal I am taking my two to the school disco and will be helping out…
As I said Busy Day! I’ll add some photos later as have a full-on Kitchen today – the house smells great – chocolate fudge throughout!
How’s yours looking?
ps – if you can’t tell (but I bet you can) this was written in less than 5 mins – got to get on!!!!!!!!

My 3 girls all have birthdays within a few weeks of each other, and the cake baking and decorating does get a little bit tiring. Fortunately I’ve never had to make 3 in one day, though!

Hi Kristen! Yes it was quite a bakeathon – the sifting of the icing sugar for the fudge was the worst part, and as usual caused a mini ant ambush later in the day, to which I retaliated by disinfecting the floor and surfaces (extreme measure – I’m normally just a washing up liquid and water gal). Another cake booked in for a 6th birthday – it’s a roller skating party so am looking for inspiration on how to make icing quad skates… thank goodness for google! 🙂

That does sound like it was a busy day Jo!
I’ve got a question for you that I’ve been mulling over for a while. Do you ever have accidental spoilage anymore or have you completely nipped it with your No Waste Fridays?
We had a beautiful and fresh bundle of asparagus that suddenly appeared destined for the compost pile when we pulled it out today. I swear we picked it up at the produce stand 4 days ago. It made me sniffle a bit. Wasting asparagus is a sin!

Hiya Tanja! The dastardly food waste week was salvaged, as usual. Apart from some soup that had to be disposed off. My top tip to reduce waste is to try and have a mix and match menu each week, so that they are based around certain food types – so 3-4 different type of veg etc. This means as the week wears on you can bulk up some meals if you can see potentially you may not use something up. I also make a lot of soup. So carrots for example, if they look like they are going to get left on the shelf then I slow cook some overnight with my store-cupboard ingredients, and can freeze. I only shop once every 7 days and by the end of the week the cupboards really are bare! But I love it! One thing I need to do is have a store cupboard amnesty and check out whats lurking and start using up. Reckon that may be a mission for the week after next as Kids on Hols and I can have a bit of a cookathon! 🙂
