It’s Friday Guys! It’s time for …
No Waste Tastes Great
Fridays I take a little time first thing to strip down the fridge and perishables cupboard, clean them, take note of anything that needs replenishing, return any items back to the fridge leaving what needs using up on the counter.
Click here to find out more about my Friday Routine
Well great news – the fridge is bare! No Waste! Yay!
As we were away last weekend, I didn’t have my usual groceries delivered, and made the decision to really scrimp through the cupboards and freezer so I didn’t have to do any shopping. Very successful… or so I thought…
Look what was hiding in the cupboard? Arggghhhhhhh!
(p.s. I haven’t magically stuck them to the wall – it’s an optical illusion!)
Okay so I am looking for suggestions as to what to do with these babies. I have an idea of my own, which will go down very well with the kids, but doesn’t consist of anyone eating them.
This does mean that tonight the Hubby and I get a Date Night
Friday Night is Date Night at Chez Wright
The added, added bonus is that we have a sitter, so the plan is to pop into the village for a beer and a balti – result!
The kids have been catered for by an emergency drop off of a few essentials for their tea – seriously we are almost completely foodless. The freezer consists of Frozen Peas, Frozen Spinach, Ice-Cream and Chicken Stock – I reckon even Heston Blumenthal would struggle to rustle up something with that. For more info on Heston check outย The Fat Duck
My New Blog’s first post will go live tomorrow with what I decided to do with the potatoes… I’ll post the link over here for those who want to take a look.

Hi Jo,
Why don’t you let the kids do some potato prints with them. I made my christmas cards the last 2 years using potatoes that we’re past their best and they turned out really well and made me feel all arty.
Maybe they could russell you but a mothers day card.

๐
Emma you are tooooooo quick!! That was the plan haha!
It’s the kids Great-Grandma’s birthday tom and I thought about doing a card, or even maybe a canvas? When I was clearing ‘My Piles’ I found a canvas going spare!
Should make some cracking photo’s for the first post on the NWTG blog.
Hope you are having a good day – how’s the application going? Jo x
Emma says
Application’s done and dusted just playing the waiting game now. The application form said they were wanting to have the interviews next week but remembering back to my days in HR I knew this was a bit optimistic of them especially in this climate when so many people are applying for every job. They’ve sent an email saying they be letting us know about interviews by the end of next week. I’ve got my fingers, toes and eyes crossed. Emma x

That is one nifty optical illusion Jo! How did you do it?
This might be weird, but I usually just cut the little sprouts out of the potatoes and cook them anyway. If they look or smell funny when I cut them open I won’t, but otherwise I use them!
simplybeingmum says
The optical illusion – cannot take credit. Photographed them from above as they sat on a wall and when I inserted into post it rotated – thought it looked kinda cool so left it (yes I’m easily pleased with myself haha!)…
Anyhow – looks as though you and Kristina would cook these potatoes so have a bit of a dilemma – Hmmmm Not sure which way to go… Food for thought eh? Jo

That happened to me a few weeks ago; I just chopped them, par-boiled them, and made a delicious breakfast scramble! Good luck with either your kitchen creativity, or kids’ craft project. ๐ Great job trying to find a way to salvage them!

Hi Kristina! Oh Boy – Now I have a dilemma!! Both you and Jenny have cooked yours at this point of sprouting – Hmmm? I’ll have a think… Bet the scramble tasted good ๐ Jo

cook them, bake with them, or cut them up and plant them! ๐
Your photo DOES look cool.

Hi Kristen! The overwhelming response (well 3 including yours!)was to cook them… So I mashed 5 for the Kid’s tea, and the fresh pots delivered by a friend are being included in next weeks meal plan. The Kid’s were so excited about the potato printing that I kept two back… – I suppose I could always plant them after if I wash them? Only problem is no raised veggie beds yet… that was the goal this year…
HUGE thank you once again for the inspiring FOOD WASTE FRIDAY – Jo

Well done! Having some spuds at the end of the week is not too bad. The quickes you can do is to clean them, chop them up into small squares, and siwrl them into an olive oil & garlic/pepper/paprika or whatever spice you have and fancy mix. Then put them into the oven for about half an hour at 170C. ๐

That sounds great… Reckon it could be a future recipe for No Waste Tastes Great! Keep ’em coming! ๐

Had a nice night… Only thing is I’m finding my alcohol tolerance limit is diminishing… 3 drinks over 3 hours and a headache the next day… Why do I bother? Haha!
