Do you ever have one of those mornings when you wake up with something on your mind?
Well this morning I woke up thinking about Food Waste Friday.
Thinking about how I was kindly asked to host alternate Friday’s by the one and only The Frugal Girl. The queen of making food saves.
Yet I do not feel I’m doing such a great job. Comments and interaction has dropped by 50% this year. I’m holding my hands up guys. 50%.
So… (I use that word a LOT in my video below as well as ‘erm’) I’m thinking I need to ask for help.
Ask for your help.
What can we do to make Food Waste Friday (when I host) more interesting and encourage others to participate?
Be brutal. Tell it how it is. Am I boring? Are my posts dull.dull.dull? Do I not inspire? How would YOU post about it if you were me?
This isn’t a post where I am fishing for compliments and looking for you to tell me that I’m doing fine as I am – I’m not. It’s okay be honest I have the hind of a rhino. Having worked in fundraising forĀ a long time my skin grew thicker each year.
In the words of Penelope Pitstop… “Help”!

Jo,
I love your food waste posts. I especially like it when you share recipes of what you are going to make for the week. I don’t comment often not because you are boring but because I don’t have anything useful to say!

I am too impatient to watch the videos and would rather read. So tend to read the written blogs and ignore the video ones. Hope this helps.

I agree – much prefer reading and photos to video. The camera jumps around too much, sound not clear, sometimes very slow to load, and I don’t always want to play the sound with others around. Much faster to read and look at photos.
I also agree with other comments about liking to see the whole routine: meal plan, frig contents, great Aldi finds, recipes, etc.
Also agree that the tone of the posts changed this year and are less appealing to me.

Jo I love your Food Waste Friday posts and from all the way over in S Texas, I look forward to seeing your Friday Fridge! I have to say, I have noticed a little bit of a shift in tone of your posts, I understood you faced some challenges in the past year perhaps? But that had nothing to do, in my mind, with the purpose of Food Waste Friday and it would never deter me from trying to gain inspiration in this area, as I am still struggling. Keep on keepin’ on, as we say!

Do you reduce waste in other areas too? I love food waste Friday just don’t comment on it. But ever since I found this I try to be more careful and clean my fridge a lot as well.

I loved it when you did your whole no waste tastes great routine as part of food waste friday and showed us your menu board and talked about how you were going to save the items. I’m trying to be much more consistent in commenting on posts. The only reason, if I don’t comment, is logistics! The post goes up Friday night (my time) when the computer is off, and I don’t often turn it on on Saturday (and if I do it’s because a 7yr old boy and his friends are playing minecraft…) I love your commitment to reducing food waste and encouraging others to do the same. I also love it when your video your fridge!

I think the numbers went down because there was no longer a place for people to link. I liked linking and visiting other sites. That’s how I found several of my blog friends.

I love your Blog and especially the videos. I never comment because I feel I have nothing interesting to say. Please more videos of your fridge. Or am I just an old saddo who enjoys seeing vids of your super organised fridge.

Always read your Friday Fridge posts, Jo, and they give me a nudge to do better for the week. No Waste has become quite natural to me after several years, and I bet you have inspired many readers to make it a regular part of life. Maybe it’s hard to comment often on something that is the New Normal!

I must admit, I usually look at your picture on fridays, but rarely read the post. If I do I am left wanting more positive feelings or “how to advice”. As in, how to not waste food during the week, how to plan before you buy more. My favorite posts of yours are uplifting and challenging. I usually feel your Friday posts are whiny. Our family is very into cooking what you have and not wasting it, so I am disappointed that I can’t get more information or feel a more common bond with you on Fridays. (I still click on you nearly every day and like what I see. Please don’t be offended by my straight shooting.)

Perhaps readership is changing as people learn how to manage their food waste better? I know that is the case for me. I came here to learn how to reduce food waste, and I feel I’ve learned many good tips and that I have made many of them into habits. But there is only so much that can be said, and then it’s up to readers to implement it. I also prefer the written posts as opposed to video, because I’m a print girl š

I rarely comment on any blog. However, I’m not a fan of the vlogs – I much prefer pics and typed words.
I agree with some others that your blog has changed a little of late…. less upbeat and a little rushed feeling, perhaps? Maybe you need a blogging break? (It seems a lot are taking them) I’m also not a major fan of the black and white starkness of the blog now,but that wouldn’t (doesn’t) stop me reading.
I have very little food waste here. Lots of last minute ‘saves’ though!! I don’t read your blog just for Food Waste Friday, I like other more day-to-day stuff – although I appreciate that it’s hard to keep up doing that with a busy life.
Whatever, yours is not a blog I plan on dropping anytime soon x

Jo i swear i wrote a reply to this..or did i just dream it? My suggestion would be for more lifestyle posts. Like how does no waste feature in other areas? Toiletries, clothes, stationary, birthdays, kids stuff. And how does it contribute to being green. I know for me personally, i have a choice, i choose to be less waste/frugal, but i know many people do it as the are on the bones of their proverbial š I loved the feed yourself for a Ā£1 a day over at a few other blogs. I think your reader traffic would increase tenfold. That’s just my tuppence worth. I am however an avid reader of your blog, and even if you didn’t change a thing i would still be here.
Love Sharron x

The plan was to do a series of posts on the subject of reducing waste – then (as you know) everything went off the boil. I’m back on track so watch this space š
