Why Aren’t You Commenting?

Oh boy that’s pretty direct isn’t it, but I needed to grab your attention before I start spending my money!

Grab a cuppa, I’m on a roll…

why ar

I have a gut feeling that comments here at the blog have dropped off since I upgraded my blog and changed from a simple comment system to Disqus. There has been a couple of e-mails from readers saying they do not like Disqus. Personally as a blog commenter myself, I like it simple, any complication when trying to comment and I click out of the site.

But before I spend my money on web development and making changes (as you know I like to consciously spend! even the BBC know that), I’m asking for your advice on what I need to do to increase comments.

Now it could be nothing to do with Disqus – it could be my blog isn’t very good, or that my posts aren’t hitting the mark any more, or you haven’t got time. All of those would be very valid reasons. I’m still glad you are reading even if you aren’t commenting and I know people are reading because I can see my stats. Sincerely I appreciate the time you spend reading my ramblings.

But I’m oh so lonely. I used to get a lot of comments and absolutely loved reading them!

So, being the chatty kind of gal that I am I’d like to ask (beg) for feedback.

Is it the comments system? Or is it something else? You can be brutal if it’s the content I’m creating – I need to know – pretty please 🙂 The truth can hurt, but it’s always worth the pain so one can improve. if it is Disqus then it will be changed back to WordPress comments asap.

If it is the comments system then it’s unlikely you are going to leave a comment (chicken and egg) so please feel free to let me know anyway you wish: here, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, contact form, e-mail or carrier pigeon (but I’m guessing you need my address for the last one unless you get a seriously clued-up pigeon).

The timing of this post is due to me having a giveaway to run and I was going to post it today but as I have a nagging doubt whether anyone will comment, I thought I’d ask now (it’s been on my mind a while).

Don’t forget guys whether you comment or not I truly appreciate every single reader. Apparently only about 5% of blog readers ever comment, but even they have dropped off although my readership hasn’t – help me solve the puzzle please…

Thanks everyone x

For me it is the log in part. But sometimes also time, as I read my emails at work.
    You a great writer!

You’re a great reader 🙂 (agree with the login – I don’t like it myself so guessing readers don’t!!)

Blog comments in general have tailed off in the last year. People are on Facebook more and more and don’t hop over to comment. You are not alone. I have read this from big bloggers as well.

Thanks Rachel – I have noticed an increase in interaction elsewhere which is great – but my blog feels very much like my virtual home and I do enjoy people popping by. Hope all good with you? Jo

I’m just not a big commenter. I read the content and move along to the next blog. Nothing against you as the blogger. I just don’t want to be another one adding their two cents where it’s not needed if that makes sense. Commenting now because you asked. 🙂

Thank you Myria – it’s very much appreciated!

I do try to comment. To acknowledge the effort you’ve made to entertain us with your blog. But when it loses them after I’ve typed something really relevant I sometimes by have the time to type it all again.

    • jo@simplybeingmum February 2, 2016, 7:11 pm

Yes have had a few comments that Disqus throws them out – thanks for the feedback!

  • Noreen February 2, 2016, 6:15 pm

    Today it worked!
But it should have said don’t have the time! Typing in a hurry again!

    Only 5%?!?!
I comment if i think the post applies to me 🙂 i tend to go by post title…picture…intro before i click on it. I know i know never judge a book by its cover. The comment box seems fine to me no problems.

    • jo@simplybeingmum February 3, 2016, 3:07 pm

5% is the figure I’ve always been quoted – how true that is I do not know – but from my previous stats I can see how many people read a post and how many leave a comment. It’s not all about comments, but it is nice to hear from readers. I’d rather people only comment when they feel they want to – but the recent drop has made me question the system I am using – my instinct is telling me it’s not the right one.

I’d venture that my experience is even less than 5%! Erm, yes…just did the math, and 5% is a number I reach only when I do a giveaway.

There are always far more lurking readers than commenters.

        • jo@simplybeingmum February 9, 2016, 6:49 pm

Absolutely – some days I get no comments but 1500 page views! it kinda doesn’t add up 🙂

  • Jean Weeks February 2, 2016, 11:40 pm

Enjoy your writing and always have. I find it difficult to reply as the comments screen is not always easily accessible.

    • jo@simplybeingmum February 3, 2016, 3:03 pm

Thanks Jean – I am going to change the comments section 🙂

  • Shakela Swinton February 5, 2016, 7:39 pm

I do enjoy reading your blog. But not much of a commenter.
Never have been. Just assumed the world is filed with enough people’s opinions I’ll
    keep mine to myself.

      Thanks Shakela!
