SuperScrimping – Reducing Your Grocery Budget Plus Simple Spaghetti Bolognese

Channel 4 are showing a great series at the moment called SuperScrimpers.

I’m loving that being frugal is now considered ‘on trend’! Yay! Finally!

As one of those that has been part of this growing community for 3 years plus, it’s refreshing.  What it does mean, however, that as an experienced SuperScrimper the show can’t teach me much I don’t already know.  Disclaimer ;-) – I don’t scrimp in all areas of my life. I don’t mind spending money but I hate wasting money! It’s about spending on what really is significant to you, not frittering it away here and there, but rather practicing Conscious Spending.

Those who have been following this blog for some time will know that in September 2011 I decided to reduce my grocery budget by 50% through choice.

I think now might be a good time for an update, and to share a healthy and nutritious recipe that would make any SuperScrimper proud.

We’re Having A ‘Use It Up Week’!

I mentioned Friday that I had a ‘Use It Up Week’ planned. This was mainly due to the guilt of my overspend on the previous weeks groceries. I’d spent £75 by online grocery shopping, which is 25% lower than what I used to spend but it’s still £25 more than what I have been spending the last few weeks. If anyone’s in any doubt how much blogging can keep you on track with developing new habits – don’t be! Since I posted about my reduced spend I feel totally accountable to meet that target as much as I possibly can…

As a fanatical meal planner I don’t carry much surplus in my cupboards, fridge or freezer, there’s no need and I believe it leads to waste. I like to think I work on more of a ‘Just In Time’ basis. But food items do creep into our home, so every once in a while I have a ‘Use It Up Week’.

Cooking From Scratch Cost Experiment – Day 2 – Burgers

So we are onto Day 2 and the good ole British weather had a surprise in store for me and my meal planning.

(**Please note this post was updated right at the end on 3rd July**)

We have the sun! And as Sharron commented on the last post – “too darn hot to cook a roast”. She’s right… I hadn’t quite got a Sunday Roast planned, but did have Toad In The Hole up my sleeve. That was soon shelved. Fortunately I buy frozen low-fat sausages (as they slow cook better – keep their shape/structure) so they just got left in the freezer for another (cooler) day. I also buy frozen minced beef, so had some to hand.

An impromptu barbecue was decided upon – and may I add the first of the year! Continue reading

No Waste Tastes Great – 4 Feb 2011

It’s Friday Guys! It’s No Waste Tastes Great at Chez Wright!

This Friday however is a special Friday as it’s the Hubby’s Birthday.

As a special treat I am taking him out for a Balti and a Beer (you can see why he married me)

:-)

Birthday or not, I still take food waste seriously and take part in Food Waste Friday over at The Frugal Girl, so have been vigilant all week to ensure that things got used as they should – apart from – wait for it… Continue reading

Top Tip Tuesday – Not-So Slow-Cooking

Slow cooking is truly amazing… to put your ingredients in the pot as you leave the house early in the morning, and arrive home to a nutritious home-cooked meal is nothing short of a miracle (in my opinion).

However slow cookers aren’t just for slow-cooking.

Slow cookers are the epitome of convenience.  There are certain dishes, such as bolognaise that can be partly cooked and then finished off in the slow cooker.

For example, prepare a beef bolognaise sauce in a pan, so that it’s almost cooked, then pop it in the slow cooker on low 2 hours prior to serving. This allows you to prep a meal at a time that suits you. From time to time I partly cook a dish just before the school run, for Dinner two hours later.

For those with partners that eat later, you can use your slow cooker to keep certain meals warm, so they can dish up when they return home.

Slow cookers are also amazing for sauces, gravy and hot punches/drinks. Perhaps you have cooked a roast dinner in the traditional way. Rather than leave the meal to get cold whilst prepping the gravy, do it in advance and leave in slow cooker ready to serve. The same goes for custard.

I always keep a pot full of mulled wine in my slow cooker the day we put up the Christmas Tree, Christmas Day and also this year New Year’s Eve!

As with any technical cooking tips – use your common sense, and adhere to the manufacturers guidelines.

Slow cooking revolutionised my life – it could revolutionise yours!

Spread the word and let’s start a Slow Cooker Revolution

Simple Top Tip Tuesday – Ice and a Slice

For those who like to keep things simple but still like a little ‘luxury’ :-) why not combine ‘Ice and a Slice’?

Simply slice a lemon or lime and freeze, then when the occasion arises add to your drink, be that a soft drink or your favourite tipple!

This is a great way to reduce potential food waste by using up any citrus fruits that could potentially be heading toward the compost heap (or recycling bin…)

Eliminate ice cubes – make that fruit multi-task!! Continue reading

No Waste Tastes Great – 17 December 2010

Friday is the day I take part in Food Waste Friday over at The Frugal Girl

I try to be one organised lady when it comes to the kitchen and food, and Food Waste Friday helps me be even more organised!

Each Friday I try to allocate 1-2 hours after the school run to do the following:

No Waste Tastes Great – 3rd December

It’s Friday, which in the Wright household is the day we take part in Food Waste Friday over at The Frugal Girl.

However I have been a bit quick of the mark this week… I actually did my fridge/perishables inventory last night.  This was mainly due to the fact that today (Friday) I had allocated as my ‘batch errand’ day Continue reading

No Waste Tastes Great – 26th November

As always, on a Friday I take part in Food Waste Friday over at The Frugal Girl

I thought I would share my Friday routine this week as I try to be one organised lady when it comes to the kitchen and food!

Each week I allocate about 1-2 hours after the school run to do the following:

  1. Firstly I clean the counter tops
  2. Secondly I grab a dry marker and my ceramic notepad (less clutter and waste)
  3. Then I empty the contents of the fridge and my perishables cupboard onto the counter
  4. Next I clean my fridge with bicarbonate of soda, and wipe out my cupboard with a damp cloth and a little washing up liquid (not too much)
  5. Once the fridge is ready to go I do an inventory of my foodstuffs.  My aim each week is to purchase for the week and not to carry over perishable items. Fruit and Veg deteriorate if not frozen, so I do try to use up within 7 days maximum.   I also only have a small fridge and do not like food clutter – so I purchase just what is needed and very rarely bulk buy – there is an argument that this isn’t very frugal but I find it reduces waste for my family.

Fridge/Perishables Inventory

  • Firstly I identify all items that can go back in the fridge – so this week I have cheese and some bacon – I note these on my ceramic pad so as not to repurchase and to ensure I include a meal that uses them up ASAP
  • Secondly I make a note of any items that need replenishing – these are the ‘add in/on’ ingredients that I frequently use – so this week it’s garlic, onions, orange juice, milk and some ketchup for my Daughter!
  • A bit of a treat was lurking in the fridge… I have an open carton of cream and half a Bailey’s bread and butter pud that I made last night to use up some bread, so that will get eaten tonight.
  • Finally I leave on the counter what needs using up and then it’s time to get creative!

So do I have anything this week to contribute to  Food Waste Friday and what am I going to do about it?? Or do the Hubby and I get a takeaway?

No takeaway for us tonight!

I have a confession – this week I skipped one of the meals (pan-fried salmon) from my meal plan and instead rustled up some omelets.  I fortunately had frozen the salmon, but still had the veggies that would have accompanied it and there were also had some veggies left over from the Vegetable Curry

So on my counter sitting in anticipation were:

  • 1 x Red Onion
  • Small Bunch of Spring Onions
  • 1 x Courgette/Zucchini
  • 5 x Peppers
  • 12 x Small Mushrooms
  • 1 x Aubergine
  • A Punnet of  Cherry Tomatoes
  • 2/3rds Tub of Soft Cheese

All of the above I decided to prep and experiment with a mediterranean lasagne in Big Ben my Extra Large Slow Cooker – and it smells amazing already.  There is so much lasagne that after we have eaten it for dinner I will freeze the remainder and we will finish it off on Meat-Free Monday.

Big Ben and my Veg to be used up

Also sitting on my counter (oops!!):

  • 5 x Parsnips
  • 3 x Apples
  • 4 x Celery Sticks

Which I quickly peeled and chopped (adding an onion, garlic and boiling water) and placed in Brenda my Vegetarian/Pudding Slow Cooker – to make a soup which I will freeze later and then have for lunch on Meat Free Monday.

Just 1 thing left…. a Lime! Which was sliced and placed in a bag in the freezer to use as a tasty alternative to ice cubes…

So I have no food waste to confess to on Food Waste Friday 26th November apart from a Tupperware box full of peelings that are off to the recycling bin – Hurrah!  I also have two meals cooking away in Bill and Brenda!

Big Ben and Brenda Cooking Away

So here we are, 1 hour and 20 minutes later, Bill and Brenda are cooking away.  I have cleaned the counter tops, loaded the dishwasher, made myself a cup of tea and started writing this post – a lovely productive non-wasteful morning.

So instead of Food Waste Friday it’s Feel Good Friday :-)

I’d like to wish all readers over in the US a Happy Belated Thanksgiving. I had planned a post yesterday and would have wished you well then but I have delayed the post as I need to do a little more research.

What I would like to do in advance of my planned post is to point you toward Katy’s post ‘Be Thankful Not Wasteful’ written by Jonathan Bloom from Wasted Food yesterday over at Non-Consumer Advocate – it’s worth a look if you don’t like to see food go to waste

Have a good day y’all
