Why did I take the shot early this week?

An Experiment In Convenience

As we were away last weekend I decided to delay my grocery shop until we returned.

I stretched what we had in the cupboards to feed us all yesterday (just!), and a grocery trip was planned for this morning.

We took a guest along last weekend, did I mention him?

Cuddles The Cat.

I’d a few photos to get printed of him having a fabulous time at the beach (for my 4-year-olds homework! – I’ve not totally lost the plot…yet…). My previous supermarket has a photo shop, so on the way to Aldi I decided to pop in.

Then inspiration hit. I only have 3 days remaining this week to feed the family, this would be a perfect opportunity to try out a little experiment.

What convenient foods can I buy with £50?

The Good, The Bad & The Could Do Better

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a photo of my grocery shop.

Exciting stuff eh? ;-)

The reason? To illustrate what I believe is the good, the bad and the could do better. As much for me, as for you. Accountability. Put it all out there for the world to see, and you see it differently yourself also. Blogging enables objectivity. It also generates feedback. I believe it’s healthy to have our actions questioned, it reduces complacency.

Last year I reduced my grocery spend by 50%. I also started shopping at Aldi, after a little hesitation. I’m still pleased with both of my actions.

There are of course good aspects to my grocery shop, some I’m not so happy with, and those that really… I should know better.

Can you guess what falls into each of those categories?

Looking good, even if I do say so myself. Top Shelf contains spreads, cheese and garlic all with life left in them. Ahead of the game today, I’ve already lunch and dinner sitting on the bottom shelf – Broccoli, Cauliflower and Stilton soup and Lasagne. Apart from that just a yoghurt and creme brulee (donated to try!) for dessert. Easy day for me then?

It could have been a whole different story.

Some Purchases Just Make Sense

I’m an advocate of – Not Buying It - where home-made options are available (and within my skill set)…

Within my home-made skill set is baking bread and pizza, composing gifts and greetings cards. And I prefer my running shoes to a gym membership.

One of my newly developed skills is baking and decorating cakes. I encourage everyone to try and bake a home-made Birthday cake. It’s frugal and personal. There’s nothing quite like your very own unique Birthday cake that no-one else will ever have, well, I don’t think so anyway (but I am a bit of a cake fanatic).

So, as my little-man’s 4th Birthday approached I started planning. There was a cake to bake for his party (not on his Birthday).

Still Decluttering? Join The Club!

It’s been over 3 years since I began our journey toward a family life simply done.

I’m still decluttering.

Is this possible?

It would appear so.

Decluttering is a bit like trying to lose weight. It’s easy to gain, not so easy to lose.

So, as a non-believer in crash diets, I’ve taken the slow and steady approach to stuff reduction.

What I’ve found as an ex-hoarder is that my mindset has changed gradually. My habits have changed also. As I said above ‘easy to gain, not so easy to lose’, for me anyway. So I’ve stopped acquiring. This has suppressed the growth of items in the home significantly. But there was always going to be the backlog to deal with.

My initial impetus was to reduce my sentimental hoard. But what I found, once I started the simplification process, was that actually I needed to do the ‘easy’ decluttering first, until there was little left to purge apart from the things I held the dearest.

I’m at that point. The wardrobe’s gone, the books have gone, most unnecessary items have been removed.

I’m still however left with this:

There’s little left to hide behind. It’s time to get ruthless.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Let’s see eh? Can I do it?

Are you struggling to make that final push, are you nearing the finish line? Is there a finish line? Please share…

Firstly apologies for the not so great shot. My DSLR camera isn’t charged (I’ve just discovered!) so I’m using my phone (not known for its quality images!)…
