Fridays I take a little time to strip down the fridge and perishables cupboard, clean both of them, take note of anything that needs replenishing and return any items back to the fridge leaving what needs using up on the counter.

The original inspiration for No Waste Tastes Great came from The Frugal Girls’ Food Waste Fridays, and for that I am eternally grateful to Kristen.

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge

This week we have:

  • Top Shelf – Olive oil spread and baking margarine plus squirty cream – all with plenty of life left in them so no action required there.
  • The huge homegrown cucumber – still hanging around from last week. It still feels firm and I am definitely going to use it up this week!
  • Two homegrown green peppers
  • Some cauliflower and broccoli
  • 4lb of homegrown cherry tomatoes (yes still working my way through these!)
The peppers will be used tomorrow as I have a Slow Cooked Rogan Josh planned for the Hubby and I.
The cauliflower and broccoli will be made into a cauli/broc cheese dish and frozen. I couldn’t do it today as I am not grocery shopping until tomorrow and we are out of cheese. At Chez Wright we operate a ‘When it’s gone it’s gone’ policy as explained in the post about reducing our grocery spend. The vegetables will last another day no problem.
Finally the tomatoes – yes I am still working my way through them. I did slow cook some tomato soup yesterday but accidentally added curry powder instead of mixed herbs oops! It still got eaten! I plan to slow cook the remainder over the weekend to make my Simply Smouldering Cherry Tomato, Chilli and Lentil Soup – which I have now adapted to include half the original amount of chilli powder based on friends and family feedback.
Normally Friday Night is Date Night at Chez Wright, but I’m out for a friend’s birthday so the Hubby will be partaking in a takeaway on his own. The kids are having a super easy beans and fish fingers Kiddy Tea!

How To Reduce Your Weekly Grocery Spend By 50%

At the end of June this year I conducted a Cooking From Scratch Experiment. I learnt a lot from doing it. Most of what I learnt came from you dear readers and your feedback. It made me think about how I was grocery shopping and preparing my meals, including the ingredients I was using and what I was purchasing.

The experiment concluded that by ‘Cooking From Scratch’ you can save in excess of 40% on ready-made foods, for me personally this could mean an extra £1500 plus each year (post tax) in the bank. ‘Head In The Game’.

Today I’d like to share how since conducting the experiment I have managed to reduce my weekly grocery spend by 50%. Chez Wright’s Grocery Budget was £100 a week, for the last few weeks I have managed to spend just £50.

This is how you could do it too:

  1. Challenge yourself to stick to a new reduced budget! In my case I decided to ‘go for it’ and halved my budget. I didn’t know if it was doable, it was. Reader feedback from my experiment made me question whether I was spending ‘up’ to a budget. So I decided to spend ‘down’. I had £50 and that was it, I had to choose wisely.
  2. Meal plan, meal plan, meal plan!!! I cannot emphasise this enough. Whatever your budget, you need a plan. Haphazard grocery shopping leads not only to wasted money but wasted food. If in doubt check out The Simple Guide To Meal Planning.
  3. Look at alternative ways of doing your shop to reduce cost! I have always been a fan of online grocery shopping. It’s highly convenient, it’s reduces browsing and impulse purchases and makes it very easy to stick to your list based on your meal plan. However it became apparent I was becoming complacent. For a while I’d been shopping for a few things in the high street as prices were considerably cheaper at my favourite shop Home Bargains. I started noticing that many staple items were up to 50% cheaper than I was paying online. I now use 2 hours of my time each week to physically shop. I write 4 shopping lists. One list for Home Bargains and staple items, one for the freezer shop (milk, ice-cream etc), one for the outdoor market where I buy fresh produce and one for the butchers. I’m lucky that all these are all in the same vicinity.
  4. Carry your shopping! I do drive to do my shop, and I park on a car-park. I then have to carry at least two separate loads back to the car. By carrying your shopping I guarantee you will think twice about popping that impulse purchase in your trolley! Last week I do not know how I got back from the market and butchers to the car, my arms were dropping off… and think of the calories I burnt.
  5. Reduce the amount of meat you eat! Not everyone is cut out to be vegetarian. If you can follow a non-meat diet you can indeed reduce your spend, and of course there are many other reasons for doing it, but it is deeply personal thing for everyone. I’ve never been a big meat-eater, and ensure that what meat the family do consume that it is of high quality. A simple way to reduce spend is to cut back on meat products or put less meat in your dishes. Our Sunday Roast now consists of Toad in the Hole which uses approx. 6 high quality sausages rather than a joint of meat. This is about a 60% cost saving.
  6. Think alternatives! As with switching a meat joint for sausages, think of alternatives to reduce cost. This could mean switching brands, for example I now pay 79p for 36 Breakfast Wheat Biscuits instead of over £2 for the leading brand. We haven’t compromised, the quality is comparable and they taste great. You could also compromise on the type of product. I always purchased freshly squeezed Orange Juice, and it was costing up to £5 a week. By reducing the quantity and type of OJ I buy it now costs less than £2.
  7. When it’s gone it’s gone! By Thursday now we are out of OJ most weeks. Too bad. We now wait till the next weekly grocery shop is done, no nipping out and restocking. Every time you enter a shop you will spend more money than you anticipate unless you are very disciplined. Not having an infinite supply of something makes you value it more. If the Hubby want’s the OJ to last 7 days, he needs to put a little less in his glass each morning. Aren’t I cruel? Don’t worry I’m hard on myself also, the coffee was rationed this week as I could see it was diminishing. So I drank a cup less a day – no bad thing eh?This post over at Zen Habits is worth a read.
  8. Reduce Luxuries! Certain things enter our grocery shop as luxuries, get cosy and end up being a staple item. I’ll admit that pre-summer we were easily buying and consuming 3 bottles of wine at an approx. cost of £15 a week. I had a budget of £100 and very often would find once I’d spent £80 I was done and would then wine shop. This has stopped. There is no need for us to have wine each night with dinner, particularly as I am training for a half marathon and alcohol dehydrates the body (I’m dehydrated enough!). It had become a habit. I now buy one bottle a week.
  9. Stretch what you do have! If making a spaghetti bolognese add extra tomatoes or mushrooms rather than mince to increase servings. When making Chilli use extra beans such as kidney and haricot to reduce meat content or eliminate meat altogether from the dish as I have now done. Pour a little less custard over a piece of apple pie so it goes round further, drink a little less OJ or wine, or coffee. Just a fraction less of each will make a big difference overall.
  10. Cook more from scratch! We have come back to where this post began. I’m in no doubt that by using basic ingredients rather than ready-made products that you can save money. My spaghetti bolognese sauce consists of toms, garlic,onion, stock cube, black pepper, herbs and puree, it’s cheap and I have it on good authority it’s as tasty as anything that comes out of a jar.

I’m just back from the school run – we biked today all together for the first time! Yay!

Only one minor mishap and fortunately it happened once the kids were safely deposited in class. I shut my finger in the bike lock. Not surprising, more haste less speed eh? Anyhow…

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge

Today we have (drum roll)…. ta da da…

  • 2 Eggs
  • A very large homegrown cucumber
  • 4 Carrots
  • 3kg (approx. 6lb) of homegrown cherry tomatoes
There is also a tub of olive oil spread, some margarine for baking, a yogurt and some garlic cloves… all of which are in date and have many days left to use up.
First born is having a play-date here after school, pancakes have been requested, that’ll use up the eggs. Sorted. And it looks like lots of cucumber sandwiches next week! Lots and lots!
The carrots and tomatoes are about to be acquainted with my slow cookers. The carrots were purchased to make my favourite soup for dinner last night, but after another donation of toms earlier in the week they were relegated. After all I had to make some more of my competition soup!
Thanks to all those that voted for me it is appreciated, the competition for this month has finished and the judges are deciding which they like best. I’m definitely submitting a soup for the next month as it is in support of one of one of the most worthwhile charities in the UK – the RNLI.
The carrots are going in Brenda (my standard and vegetarian cooker) to make my favourite soup and the tomatoes are being cooked over the weekend in Big Ben to make Simply Smouldering Cherry Tomato, Chilli and Lentil Soup. I have 3kg (6lb) and this will take three batches to cook.
It should make about 24 servings I would imagine – to be frozen. One batch is being gifted back to running_mum who donated the toms.

Those who follow No Waste Tastes Great know that Friday Night is Date Night at Chez Wright. I conceded last Friday and ordered a takeaway on the Hubby’s request. We had Chinese and watched Fight Club (one of my all time favourites). However £12 lighter in the wallet and a good bout of indigestion means that this week I am cooking. It’s no hassle to make a slow cooked curry in Lil’ Bill (my other standard non-vegetarian slow cooker).

So that’s the plan. I have pilau rice and naan bread already, so I will pick up some fresh free range chicken at lunchtime and chuck it all in! No wine tonight though, just 4 weeks till the half marathon and the long weekend run is now up to 9 or 10 miles (I did 16 last week with a 5 hour break between the first 8 and second 8).  Not really possible to do it even with the slightest thick head – well it is doable but why make life hard for yourself?

Simply Smouldering Cherry Tomato,Chilli & Lentil Soup Recipe

It’s been a while since I have posted a recipe, and yet this is my real passion. This doesn’t mean to say I haven’t been cooking and experimenting, I have, but just haven’t got around to posting any of the recipes.

Those of you who follow No Waste Tastes Great, will know that last Thursday in anticipation of having some tomatoes left over (from a very kind donation) I made a slow-cooked tomato soup which was lovely! It’s the first time I had made it without lentils, yet it was still fantastic. Really tasty, which I am sure was down to the ‘homegrown’ element of the ingredients. Plus they were donated, which means they didn’t cost a penny. At the risk of sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge – that made them taste even better! :)

Upon doing my meal plan last week, and then my grocery shop I had planned in a tomato soup for this Thursday coming. Thursday night is my 10k run night in training for the half marathon (just 4 weeks away now…). Soup is a great dinner as it digests well and doesn’t induce stitch!

However, the market stall I buy my produce from didn’t have any suitable tomatoes, so I purchased carrots instead for my favourite soup.

It must have been fate, as Sunday I got a text from my good friend Running_Mum who claimed she had a ‘EU Mountain of Cherry Tomatoes’ which her Hubby had grown this year. Despite making Chutney and Ragu for the freezer, she still had an abundance. Yay! I had toms, and lots of them!

Simply Smouldering Cherry Tomato, Chilli & Lentil Soup – Slow-cooked of course!

(This isn’t the soup I made last Thursday – I’ll post that in the future)

Ingredients:

  • 450g (1lb) Cherry Tomatoes (Halved)
  • 150g (1/3 lb) Sundried Tomatoes (Sliced)
  • 150g (1/3 lb) Dried Red Lentils
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (Crushed)
  • 1 Teaspoon (5ml) Chilli Powder (Strength dependent on taste – I used ‘Hot’ and it had a real kick, which I like! Bear this in mind, perhaps start with 1/2 teaspoon if unsure, or use mild *update 26/09 I did a second batch of this for a friend and used 1/2 teaspoon and it actually tasted better with less chilli)
  • 1 Teaspoon (5ml) Cumin Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon (5ml) Dried Basil
  • 1 x Medium Onion (Finely diced)
  • 1 Tablespoon (15ml) Tomato Puree
  • 900ml (1+1/2 Pints) Hot Vegetable Stock
  • Blackpepper to season
Instructions:
  1. Rinse and drain the Dried Lentils. Then boil rapidly for 10 minutes. When cooked re-rinse and then leave to drain whilst you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Wash and halve the Cherry Tomatoes and pop in slow-cooker.
  3. Add the sliced Sundried Tomatoes. If using tomatoes out of a jar make sure you drain the oil.
  4. Add the crushed Garlic Cloves, the Chilli and Cumin Powder.
  5. Add the finely diced Onion and the Basil.
  6. Add the Tomato Puree and the cooked Red Lentils stir well.
  7. Pour over the Hot Vegetable Stock, add some Blackpepper to season and stir well again ensuring all ingredients are mixed thoroughly.
  8. Place lid on the standard Slow-Cooker – ensuring there is at least 1″ at the top without liquid/ingredients.
  9. Leave for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low
  10. When cooked blend carefully with a hand-blender to desired consistency.
This Soup can be kept for up to 48 hours in the refrigerator or can be frozen and used within 1 month.

*Don’t forget that as tempting as it may be to lift the lid and have a stir or a sniff of the lovely aroma, that every time you do it will increase cooking time by 20 minutes.  Reduce the need to stir by always ensuring that you have stirred well when adding everything initially.

It’s Friday Guys – time for No Waste Tastes Great

There’s no doubt this week I kept my ‘Eye On The Prize’, there wasn’t a day where I wasn’t inspecting the fridge and checking out what was to be used up in anticipation of No Waste Tastes Great. This was partly due to the fact that this week I didn’t do a grocery shop and had one of my ‘use it up’ weeks.

I’ve shared the way I meal plan and shop already on this blog, but it has since changed. I’ll be posting about it soon having recently reduced my grocery spend by at least 25% a week.

What impact did this have on my Friday Fridge this week?

So it’s toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches at lunch for my beautiful Son and I, and then an omelette with frozen veggies for him at dinner.

For the first week in an eternity it will be a takeaway for Date Night at Chez Wright. I’ve resisted the temptation to grab a few ingredients on the way home from the school run for a slow cooked curry, after the Hubby commented wistfully earlier this week that it had been ‘AGES since we’d had a takeaway’…

The reason for the total lack of waste this week is due to not doing a shop and really thinking about what could be used up and how. Earlier in the week we had a lovely donation of some ripe homegrown tomatoes from a work colleague. They were sitting in the fridge yesterday, and inspiration struck.

Last night we had slow cooked tomato soup and cheese and tomatoes on toast.

It was the first time I’d made it without lentils and we really enjoyed it. One portion even travelled with me on the school run this morning as I gifted it to a friend who has started Weight Watchers. It’s less than 1 point per serving!

Simply Being Mum’s Friday Fridge

It was back to school at Chez Wright this week, or more accurately back to school for first born and starting school for second born. It’s been a busy week!

Regardless, food waste, or rather the elimination of it, is always firmly in mind, so I’ve been keeping a close on my my fridge and perishables.

This weeks suspects were (I say were as we are now post dinner!)

Cauliflower

The other items in the fridge you can see are well in date staple items I plan to use next week… oh and a tub of baking margarine as I had an impromptu two-tier Christening Cake to make today for Sunday!

To use up the eggs (I had six more for the cake sat on the counter I had to grab on the way back from the school run), I decided an end of first week at school treat was in order. Since returning from France the Kids have been requesting Crepes. The cauli will be made in cauliflower cheese tomorrow accompanied by Toad In The Hole and frozen veggies.

Simply Being Mum’s version of Crepes – Pancakes with Vanilla and Honeycomb Ice-Cream and Maple Syrup

I admit not the healthiest meal, but everything in moderation and it’s not an everyday occurrence.

It went down well…

The Hubby will be tucking into slow cooked spag bol that I froze from a batch I did the other day. Normally Friday Night is Date Night at Chez Wright, but I am off out to see a Queen Tribute band with Mom and Big Sis.

No Waste Tastes Great 2 September 2011

Gosh it’s been almost a month since I’ve written a NWTG post… doesn’t time fly?

This doesn’t mean to say that food waste (the reduction/elimination) hasn’t been firmly in mind.

We sailed over to Brittany in France on Thursday 11th, and did the overnight crossing to St Malo. Normally there’d have been a NWTG post on the 12th. I didn’t get chance in the busyness of packing to prepare one in advance, and had decided to step out of the blogging/virtual world once we hit the road and sea. There was not a bean in my fridge or freezer. In fact we switched the freezer off. The fridge stayed on as I had a few condiments in the bottom. The week before we had gone away I had emptied my untidy storecupboard and set about using everything up. In fact I didn’t do a grocery shop that week, relying once again on tinned and dried ingredients. We ate well… and I love doing this. I’m a pretty creative person and get immense satisfaction from making something from scratch and practically from nothing.

I was able to sail away with peace of mind knowing that I had an empty fridge/freezer and would not return to any nasties lurking.

My No Waste Tastes Great habits did not disappear once on holiday. The first week I photographed my French Fridge (which was larger than the one I have at home!). We were heading off to our next destination on the Saturday and everything in the fridge was used up on that Friday.

The following friday I didn’t photograph my fridge, but once again all was used up. Everything in our fridge was outed onto the outdoor table and we barbecued meat and used up salad (in the rain – gotta love Northern European weather). The fridge was once again bare.

We’ve been back since early hours Sunday. I did a grocery shop Sunday, and I’m back in the usual NWTG groove.

Todays suspects are:

2 x peppers

Broccoli

3 Sausages

Thats your lot!  I’d clocked what would be left over yesterday so in anticipation I picked up some free range chicken. That means toad in the hole with veggies for kids and a slow cooked chicken rogan josh for Date Night at Chez Wright. Since doing my cooking from scratch cost experiment a few weeks ago, I struggle to buy a takeaway now (particularly when I have peppers to use up!).

How has the battle against food waste been going for you Guys? is it becoming a habit or are we still getting to grips with that once weekly empty fridge?

Reckon it’s a habit for me now – must be if I don’t even take a vacation from it when on holiday!
