Faminimalism – simplybeingmum’s Story

Today (27th February) is the 2-year anniversary of our family’s journey toward a

family life simply done

Feeling totally overwhelmed with stuff, commitments and life in general, this day two-years ago, I took my almost 9-month old Son for a walk to the local library.

There on the bookshelves was a book entitled
Simplify Your Life – Downsize and De-stress by Naomi Saunders

Reading Naomi’s book was the first step on a long and tremendously fulfilling journey, one that, for me and my family, there will be no final destination. Life is a work in progress, as is simplifying your life.

My story isn’t one of massive debt reduction, or overcoming obsessive shopping habits. It actually isn’t very exciting. Continue reading

Simple Meal Plan 26 Feb 2011 Plus Some Great Reading

Each week I plan for 6 days of meals, with Friday as my free day where I take part in The Frugal Girls Food Waste Friday and my very own No Waste Tastes Great Challenge.

Because I’m a simple gal, I order my groceries on-line for the week ahead and they are delivered. This also means I do not have to step into a supermarket – hurrah! No impulse purchases and queuing for me!

I budget up to £100 per week to cover everything… and pretty much I keep to it apart from holidays and when I am doing extra catering.

Breakfasts consist of, cereal, toast, pancakesbran loaf.

This week puddings/dessert consist of fruit, yoghurt, cake and custard.

No Waste Tastes Great 25 Feb 2011

It’s Friday Guys! Time to take part in The Frugal Girl’s Food Waste Friday and my very own No Waste Tastes Great Challenge.

Each Friday I follow my Routine, which means that by the time I type this post I will have stripped my fridge/perishables cupboard down, cleaned it, noted down any food stuffs required, popped a few things back in, and left on the counter the foodstuffs that could potentially go to waste.

Then it’s time to get the culinary thinking cap on, and conjure up some recipes…

So what is sitting on the counter this week in anticipation?

No Waste Tastes Great – 18 Feb 2011

It’s Friday Guys! Time to take part in The Frugal Girl’s Food Waste Friday and my very own No Waste Tastes Great Challenge.

Each Friday I follow my Routine, which means that by the time I type this post I will have stripped my fridge/perishables cupboard down, cleaned it, noted down any food stuffs required, popped a few things back in, and left on the counter the foodstuffs that could potentially go to waste.

Then it’s time to get the culinary thinking cap on, and conjure up some recipes…

So what is sitting on the counter this week in anticipation?

1. A punnet of button mushrooms

2. A few white potatoes

And that’s it!

No takeaway for the Hubby and I tonight then, but I don’t mind, as I can slow cook a nice Potato and Mushroom Balti with the help of a few store-cupboard ingredients. I always have eggs and frozen veggies on hand to make an omelette for the Kids.

How’s your fridge looking today? Will you be cooking up a No Waste Tastes Great meal?

Going Car Less Update…Taking a Hint

Okay so I got my car back last Friday. I still didn’t use it that day as I had enjoyed walking.

Then on Monday it rained, so I used it to do the pick up from school and what should happen? I had a collision, well I say collision, somebody shunted me on the car-park - Hint number 1

Back to walking, not due to the damage but I got the feeling something or someone might be trying to drop a hint. And it had brightened up!

Thursday morning, went out to car. Back right window had disappeared. It had dropped down into the car door and it wouldn’t go back up – strangely enough! Back to walking again - Hint Number 2

Anyone else seen Stephen King’s ‘Christine’?

Update Friday 18th – had fixed window – or had I? Dropped down again when on my necessary car journey! Feeling a bit spooked!

How TV Ruined Your Life

There are lot’s of things Britain doesn’t do well - I’m not going to list them but they know who they are (public transport, motorways and frequent refuse collection…)

One thing that the British do very well is comedy.

I remember from a very early age watching the Carry On films (not understanding the double entendre), Open all Hours and Only Fools and Horses. And later as a teenager, Monty Python, The Young Ones and of course the all-time classic Blackadder.

Tonight I had the pleasure of watching ‘How TV Ruined Your Life – a fantastic satirical look at how the messages conveyed by TV and the Movies wildly differ from ‘life’s grim reality’. Charlie Brooker you did your country proud.

The point of the show wasn’t to suggest that we all revolt, remove our TV’s from our homes, take them to the top of the tallest building and proceed to throw them off the top.  I’m not going to suggest that either. Rather the opposite.

I am here to defend TV.

The problem with TV today isn’t the actual physical TV. We can remove it from our homes, or we can simply exert control and turn it off (and on) as we choose.

If my childhood home had not had a TV, I would not have happy memories of sitting watching the Carry On films on a Sunday afternoon with my family.

TV gets a bad rap sometimes. It’s not TV’s fault, it’s our fault. There’s a saying “A bad workman blames his tools”.

Exercising control is all it takes. If we choose to live completely TV free, how do we learn moderation, and to have a healthy relationship with TV? When we need to lose weight do we stop eating, or do we try to learn to eat more sensibly and with restraint? By not having something, or depriving someone of something could it be they ultimately desire it more?

TV can’t ruin your life unless you let it.

Top Tip Tuesday – Resisting The Kid’s Treats

Anyone who has children will know that the treat box has supernatural powers.

I can hear the innate object, filled with goodies, come to life calling me from the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard, even when I am outside pegging the washing. It’s on the top shelf to stop the Kid’s freely accessing it…unfortunately I am 5’8″ and can reach.

It’s ‘Two for Tuesday’ this week as I have two top tips to resist the calling: Continue reading

True and Unrequited Love

Don’t worry Guys I’m not about to get all soppy on you.

It is of course St Valentines Day.

We don’t celebrate it at Chez Wright (that’s what you get for marrying an Accountant with minimalistic tendencies) but being as the rest of the world is getting lurved up I thought I’d share something with you that is dear to my heart.

Spending, or in my case – Conscious Spending.

Today I implore you before you make any purchases (romantic ones or not) say those three little words… not ‘I love you’ rather;

  • Need
  • Love
  • Afford

Do I need it? Do I love it? Can I afford it?

There are more questions to be asked, but these three are key. If you want to know what else I ask myself then head on over to

The Simple Guide to Conscious Spending

However if your issue is more unrequited love – you do love it but can’t really have afford it, then why not get some advice from The Minimalist Mom who has guested over at Minimalist at Home

Three Steps To Wanting Less

Have a lovely St Valentines Day everyone – however you choose to spend it or not spend it
